I always assumed it was meant to be ironic!
Re: the GOP, I can think of another group of people who might fear them: people who don't want the planet to be blown to smithereens. Or people who don't really like the idea of living in a Darwinist dystopia. Oh, and people who might one day need to go to hospital and aren't millionaires. Did I forget to mention people who don't want their children shot at primary school? And people who don't think America needs a bigger dose of Christian fundamentalism? God, I could go on forever...

I just don't think he or she realises the consequences of their comments in REAL Christian terms of helping your neighbour, goodwill unto all others, blessed are the peacemakers etc etc...... |

^ the only viable answer to the question is "neither - it's a religion with several clear injunctions to violence in its core text, and its roots in still-patriarchal societies with harsh histories. You get a fair bit of violence out of that mix, but it's still way under 1% - maybe more if you count fellow-travellers".
Only the "don't knows" earn an animal stamp out of that survey.
