As you know, the Loopy Gun-nut Conspiracy Party ... sorry, the Republicans ... are trying to bring the US economy to its knees, just because they can. They lost the election but they don't seem to care. I came across this reader comment in The Guardian. It sums things up so concisely that I thought it was worth repeating here.

Quote:
If anyone wants to know where 99% of the craziness in America comes from, it's the Republican Party. They are the Party of guns, oil, and Jesus, not necessarily in that order. They are the Party that created Citizens United, that allowed corporations to give any amount of money to politicians. They are against access to health care, protecting the environment, regulating banks, taxing businesses, the income tax, women's rights over their own bodies, and are opposed to government in general.

Republicans are fearful by nature, like to see the world in black and white, and believe the monstrous lie that trickle-down economics works. They are run by the Christian Conservative movement and see no need to protect the earth or do anything short of hurrying down Doomsday so Jesus can save them and the bugs can take over

Yep what's happening over there is a disgrace. Right or wrong a democratically elected government should have the right to govern.

The American public made their choice in Government known after each party went to an election with some clear policy's.

How dare the opposition use what power they have to block the agenda of an elected government who were clear in their intentions and gave the public clear choice BEFORE an election.

Would never happen in Australia........oh, hang on

Don't try that greasy, dishonest twisting the truth caper on me, sonny boy. I wasn't born yesterday, and neither were most of the others here in the VPT.

1: There are honest majorities and there are dishonest cheating ones. Honest majorities (such as, for example, the one the Australian Senate right now; Abbott's majority in the house of reps (53.5%); and Gillard's majority in the previous House (50.1%)) which exist because the majority of citizens (more than 50%) voted for the parties holding that majority. In the USA, the Republican House majority exists only because of electoral boundary scams. It is dishonest. The people of the United States voted against these loopy right-wing nuts by a majority of over 5,000,000 citizens. (Compare with the three Australian examples above, where in each case the majority was an honest one; with more than 50% of the votes behind it.)

It is instructive to see you happily supporting the dishonest, dysfunctional result of an unfair electoral system.

2: There is honest, fair opposition and there is dirty play below the belt. A party is perfectly entitled to oppose legislation. It is not entitled to oppose the functioning of government itself. This is why, here in Australia, we have an ironclad convention that opposition parties do not block supply. (The only time that gentlemen's agreement has been broken in recent years was in 1975. The guilty party was, of course, the Liberal Party, which, like the Carlton Football Club and the GOP, honestly believes that rules do not apply to it, and fair play is something only the other clubs and parties need abide by.)

The Republicans are trying to stop the operation of a law to improve America's terrible disgrace of a health care system. It is not legislation they oppose, it's already L. A. W. law. It has been passed by Congress, it has been passed by the US Senate, it has been signed by the President. It has already been challenged in the US Supreme Court and that challenge comprehensively dismissed.

The Republicans lost. Lost fair and square. So now they are trying to use dishonest, unfair, counter-productive methods to wreck the whole game.

Remind you of anyone we know?

I have some friends in the US that hate Obama. Now I laugh as they never vote. They are against the Obama version of Medicare. They view socialism as the commies taking over and any atheists are evil. Its very interesting for me when I visit. We do have our arguments about politics but we are good friends that see the world differently.
For what its worth the US will destroy itself. We may even have a new civil war.
You can't compare our democratic system to theirs at least we don't have millionaires buying seats. Embarassed

What the hell are you on about ?
Im agreeing with you in that the Republicans are a disgrace in blocking Government. Obama was fairly elected. Not sure how I could be clearer than that.

In terms of who it remind's me of, well when Howard was booted I thought the coalition gave bipartisan support to eliminate workchoices. A key platform at the election.

This election party standings were fairly clear on some very significant pieces of legislation the Krud/Killard government introduced. Abbott got in with a majority of the primary so Id have thought Labor would give him their support in overturning these pieces of legislation.

In fairness though I had been waiting for the predictable ( and justified) post pointing out the republicans actions being disgraceful. One sided and bias commentary in the Tavern would not have drawn the comparison to the current situation here though and it didn't disappoint.

So, what happens now? Does anyone know?

Apart from the Republicans being routed in the next congress elections (one can only hope...)?

^^^ Someone picks up an assault rifle and shoots up a school to express their heart-felt frustration about the defects in the US electoral system. That's usually how things end over there.

Very good, WPT. Mr. Green

No-one's answered my question, though: what's the most likely result of all this? What can happen? Or does nobody actually know?
