Not good enough for the potential trouble he will bring.

Quote:
The AFL has asked Richmond to investigate why midfielder Dustin Martin offered a jailhouse salute after he kicked a goal during the Tigers' upset loss to Carlton on Sunday.

Martin made the emotional tribute in front of the biggest ever crowd at an elimination final after booting a goal in the second term of the 20-point defeat at the MCG.

The Tigers do not know what prompted the celebration, or to whom it was directed.

AFL spokesman Patrick Keane confirmed on Monday the league had contacted the Tigers.

"We asked the club to deal with it via their in house mechanisms, rather than have us issue a formal note to him," he said.

Absolutely fuming at this. Who do these people think they are? Who does this self-righteous knob Luke Darcy think he is to pontificate on it? Perhaps the AFL would do better to focus on their own poor governance than pile onto a player for offering some support to a friend or family member.

You won't get an argument from me on this one David. I agree with you completely.

You should have heard them go on about it in Football Classified. Said it was a gesture of utmost disrespect and they should bring in a $10K fine so it doesn't happen again.

I don't get it... kick a goal 'n give some sort of 'salute'??? How about carrying on and actually winning the game?
1 goal = well, 6 points, hardly the saluting, fist pumping crap that a lot of players come up with.

Why is showing solidarity to someone in jail so bad? Actually being in jail is not a crime, the crime was committed (or not) earlier and the person is 'paying their debt to society'. This doesn't even take into consideration people wrongly convicted or people who might be in jail for victimless crimes like being a drug addict and being charged with having drugs on them (not dealers, that's another question).

All that aside, it must be bloody hard to be serving a prison sentence and if one of my mates was in jail, even if they'd done something stupid or bad, I'd want to show them some support. These 'salutes' might actually give someone hope and lead to them coming out a better person rather than just another graduate from the University of Crime.

The AFL and Channel 7 should concentrate on more important issues in footy . Such as performance enhancing drugs, salary cap rorting and draft tampering. If 6 year old start doing it you have to wonder what sort of country we live in if friends of kids aged 6 are in jail or their relatives are locked up. Unless of course they do as a gesture because a teammate can't play footy because his Mum made him go see his sisters ballet recital.

Did any of them make a compelling case why? Or is it just "not a good look"? Rolling Eyes

in your world people invariably can do what they want.

if martin was playing in front of 200 people out at casey fields would he have given the salute then? doubt it.

he comes across as a moron who just so happens to be able to play footy.

Hard to argue with any of that.

Just "not a good look" and needs to be stamped out.

^ Yeah, I thought that would be about it.

And neither would Rhyce Shaw have acknowledged Bob Rose after kicking a goal a few days after he died. Neither would Chris Tarrant have kissed his jumper after returning to Collingwood in 2011. I didn't see much criticism then. What's your point?

Unless you or anyone else can provide a solid reason why Dustin should be penalised for this, get off his back.
