That club has been there since the 1800's, so stop complaining, you and your friend stuffed up.

the fact that they require a collared shirt is hardly a big deal. perhaps you should have asked your host if there were any dress requirenents.

just cos we're in 2013 doesn't mean we have to throw all standards to appease the great unwashed.

yep David, and you argue for arguments sake. It's who you are.

It's a small rule and it's not going to create mayhem, but, still you want to argue the point that it exists.

This woman , Elizabeth Hayes (first lady to enter the long oom as a guest) , must have been a rebel at the time because she was part of having some of "the rules" changed thirty years ago tomorrow , on July 2nd 1983

I actually thought the whole collar dress code was common knowledge.

I've sat in MCC before and to be brutally honest, they all seem like a pack of pretentious arrogant snobs. Especially the elderly.

However, the behaviour and language is just as feral as that of the Cheer Squads Peter and the AFL Members area.

I think the whole 'aura' of the MCC is done and dusted. It's nothing more than a glorified AFL Members area now.

I'm a bit like David, as in I dislike collared shirts. I own one though. Only comes out to go to the MCC area.

Though if I go to a pies game, I have my Collingwood shirt on, so it's not an issue.

For all of those saying "Just wear a collar", can anyone explain what was so offensive about what I was wearing (that is, neat, close-fitting long-sleeved jumper)? Would my appearance in this outfit have detracted from anyone's enjoyment of the game? Or was I merely the thin edge of the wedge which culminates in hoodies, gangsta caps and thongs (all things that a revised dress code would be unable to prevent)?

We've established that it's their prerogative to have whatever dress code they please, but the point is that it seems ridiculously petty. Some people here are MCC members, which means you probably get voting rights on these policies. Would it be the end of the world if you voted to relax these rules somewhat? Or do you like the feeling of being 'special' too much? Neutral

I think this sentence sums up the mentality at work here:

One is a bit of an understatement. I own plenty of collared shirts. I wear one every day for work.

But I mean in a casual sense to go to the footy, I don't own too many Ralph Lauren style collared shirts. Mainly t-shirts. I've got a few really nice casual collared shirts. One's I wouldn't wear to the footy.

Oh, don't worry, the price does that. That, and the general snobbery...

And another rule that perhaps ought to be critiqued. But I digress... Shocked

So, if they lowered the standard, where do they stop? Will you then have a problem that they won't let you in with thongs on? They want to enforce a minimum standard of dress and have every right to do so.

yes, in golf you used to have to wear knee high socks and absolutely only metal spikes.

Now metal spikes are banned (they finally figured out that they damage the greens) and any type of sport sock is allowed. Why was the knee high sock a rule?

Golf also used to allow only collared shirts. however, some golf tops now dont have collars and that is ok as long as they are golf tops.

I'm just saying.

the rule is to make sure people are dressed neat casual (as someone else said). a collared shirt is one way to ensure you are neat casual). I would argue that a very pretty sweater with a jacket could also be neat casual ands the morons should be able to know that.

respect is a two way street!

15 years and over??? Then I have a long standing complaint to make!!

My MCC story is that the very first time I attempted to attend the cricket I was rejected due to this very issue. I had no collar on.

The problem was, my father had only recently become an MCC member (this was around 25 years ago) and probably didn't realise the rule. He took me on the train to the Big Smoke to attend a game. I was around 11 years old.

The crusty old guy stopped me as we were entering and the conversation between him and my dad went like this:
"Does he have a collar on?"
"Uh.. well.. no. But he's just a kid".
"Doesn't matter. No collar, no entry".
"But.. I've bought him all the way on a VLine train!"
"Doesn't matter. No collar, no entry".
"But..."
"No collar, no entry".

People were all looking at me and I was horribly embarrassed and apologetic. My dad never got pissed off but this really did annoy him. He marched over to one of the merchandise places and bought the cheapest polo shirt he could find (it may have even been an MCC one) put it on me and walked back to the entrance. Only then would the guy let me in.

Ever since it's been a running joke in the family. Whenever we go to the football or cricket, they all stop to make sure that I have a collar on!

....and after all these years I can claim belated victory... I was under fifteen and therefore.... (dramatic drum roll)... THE OLD PEDANTIC MCC GUY WAS IN THE WRONG!!

(slightly hollow victory.. the old guy is probably no longer of this earth)

The one time I went to the members, about ten years ago, I was warned about the dress code (which is now worded differently) and made sure I was correctly attired. I had a fantastic night, the Pies won, and after quite a few chardonnays I asked some people how come they were admitted when they were wearing track suit pants. They told me that the rules stated that acceptable pants did not have visible stitching along the seams and their tracky pants complied! The old doorman was a darling.

This is an outrage David. Who do they think they are attempting to maintain a dress standard. Write to your local member and / or arrange arbitration with VCAT.

Or, just wear a collared shirt if you are invited again and you wish to attend.

Rather than just mindlessly chanting "the rules are the rules", would you like to offer an opinion as to why such a dress code exists in 21st century, supposedly classless Australia?

We talk a lot about classless Australians at the Victoria Club. Frankly, we are opposed to them.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....

MCC Dress code is straight forward and is intended to ensure that everybody is comfortable in what they are wearing to the same event. It maintains standards that suit people across all ages from the very young to the very old. The MCC is steeped in history and from the days where suit tie and bowler hat were the norm the rules have gradually changed evolved and relaxed without petition, so don't worry your precious little hearts, the rules will keep evolving.
For example they no longer apply for concerts and the like, common sense yeah?

Dress codes exist everywhere, from the casino to clubs and restaurants, to even people asking you to remove your shoes before you come in. Same shit different bucket....get over it.

If you think we are all elitist snobs in the MCC and don't wish to sit with us because you have to wear a polo (which is what some of you are saying) ....good ......piss off. I don't wish to sit next to protencious arty farty types who repeatedly question the moral fabric of society just for arguments sake and because they can. Chances are this is more about your own inferiority complex, as many members are niether well off or well to do such am i, but I'll do you a favour, pm me your addresses and ill mail you a frickin polo.
