Whoops!
The next club in strife due to the actions of their rich owner is none other than Southampton.
The bloke who bought the club a few years ago, Markus Liebherr sadly dies. Now his daughter Katherina Liebherr is in charge. She doesn't get on with the General Manager Nicola Cortese (the GM who has masterminded Southampton's resurgence). She wants to rein in expenditure. Big rumour is she wants to fully cash in. She wants players with currency in the market to be sold.
So Cortese the mastermind General Manager naturally quits. The Football Manager Mauricio Pochettino, who Cortese hired last year, is also now expected to quit.
Katherina Liebherr has installed herself as GM. Players are expected to be sold. Eg Lambert, Shaw, Lallana...
Rumour is she wants to sell the club outright.
An implosion!
This is just the sort of thing UEFA is trying to avoid with the FFP. But if you sell your club you are at the owners whim. Not every owner is interested in working in a clubs best interests, especially when they want to cash in on their investment and bail out!
At the moment, it appears to be; stuff the fans, stuff the club I inherited. I own it all and I want the biggest return possible.
Let's hope it resolves itself in a sensible manner. |

Some good developments on the Southampton front. Manager Pochettino announces he will stay and will be working towards a solution in hopefully preventing a fire sale of players.
This may well end reasonably, but it still shows how vulnerable 100 year old clubs are now. Without the injection of funds a rich owner brings, you can't compete. When the relationship with the owner sours, the entire club is in peril. Hope it gets sorted, but it won't be last case that happens. The bubble that is European football is bursting and UEFA know it. |

don't know what it is about those black and white stripes...
but Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has overshadowed the team's best win in two months by headbutting an opposing player on the sideline:
