There's over 6 billion people outside of Australia who have no allegiance to a team. We should set up an AFL umpiring academy overseas, pay them a professional wage and get the independence so desperately needed.

No thank you. We don't need any more third world umpires. Look at the problems cricket has with that.

What we need though is to recruit more former players to the role. Not necessarily former AFL players, but certainly guys who have played the game at a reasonable level and understand the nature of football.

I don't want some pedantic bank clerk making decisions to rob Cloke blind. Nor do I want midgets like Chamberlain who only took up umpiring because he was too short for professional dwarf throwing competitions. Razz

Look, tonight is the proof that the umps are trying to get things back on an even keel. Sure, the 'Pies couldn't get a free last week against the Blooz. They're evening the score by giving all of ours to the 'Aints. Presently 12 to 2 in that game.

Ah, well spotted. The flippant thing to say (and we'd be right) is that there is a Hierarchy of Umpires' Support:

(1) Every side that plays Collingwood gets all the 50/50 decisions and then some (especially in front of goals).

(2) Carlton is the next side in this hierarchy to be hated by the umpires, so that unless Collingwood is playing Carlton, every other side gets a leg up against the Blooze. Believe me I've seen the Scum get their fair share of pain from the maggots this year too.

(3) All non-Victorian teams are to be given preferential treatment, unless (and this is the critical thing) rule (4) applies.

(4) On all occasions umpires must give preferential treatment to Hawthorn, Geelong and Essendon. The only exception to this rule is when they play each other, in which case it is "umpire's call".

Does Joel Selwood have his own list? Cause it would look like:

2013: 20/0
2012: 50/0
2011: 48/1 (the umpire who paid the free against was sent bush for 2012)
2010: 54:0
2009: 39:0 (still learning the ducking techniques)

....

Joel Selwood: For/Against
2007: 36/20
2008: 63/21
2009: 59/36
2010: 53/24
2011: 60/26
2012: 56/22
2013*: 36/16

revert back to one umpire ,they can inter-change each quarter, that will reduce stuff ups by 2 /3rds.

Should ask the umpires and hear what they have to say, the umpires not the Geish and the committees ....just the umpires that run on the field.

The player should never earn a free kick......very true.
