I disagree with Twain (and therefore I guess you) on that, there is a cultural unifier in nationalism and patriotism that builds a collective identity and pride. This isn't mutually exclusive of genorousity of spirit or love of ones fellow man. I know this will elicit some shrill response from our resident multicult internationalists but unity is strength, and having a strong sense of nationhood unifies all people and cultures who choose to live in said nation.
I really don't understand why in this modern world, free from expansionist ideology, people are so terrified of national pride. |

I'm with WPT, mostly. Happy for people to do what makes them happy so long as they're not hurting anyone, but it is a little cringeworthy. Kind of like if a neighbour put a big yellow M on their roof.
(That wasn't a very patriotic thing to write, was it? )

I don't see what the big deal is to be honest apart from it possibly being an eyesore for others.
As long as no one is 'harming' or 'intimidating' anyone then I don't see how someone can be denied the right to fly the Australian flag on their property unless some form of legislation I'm unaware of denies them of that choice.

Bloke down the road from me has a flag pole in his front yard.
He flies a Collingwood flag at times. Other times nothing.
good luck to him I say. If he was flying a Carlton flag, his house probably would have been burnt down years ago.

I am all for patriotism. This is why I despise Yank-loving traitors to this, our own country with its own ways. If you want to be an American-style flag-waving patriot, that's fine. Go to bloody America to do it and don't sully Australia with your foreign ways.

So just how much right, or how much say should you have in what your neighbours do? A flag pole would not annoy me as much as those stupid, ugly 20 foot tall plastic palm trees! And no where near as much as the house with the grass 4 foot long, the plants all overgrown, and the shutters hanging off!
I'm really curious to know, exactly what is, or should be "the Australian way?"

Flag waving? If you're going to wave a flag, it might as well be white to indicate you've surrendered and joined the Lesser Apes.
