Somethings not ringing true there either, they say they left him alone for five minutes, then went to get him, how far could he have got in five minutes? I reckon the normal reaction of a child left like that would be to run after the car, at least for thirty seconds. Certainly not to bolt off into the forest.
Abandonment sure is harsh punishment, terrifying for a kid that age.

These parents do deserve to be charged.

^^^ I didn't read the story closely, but he seems to have snuck into an army base on the first day and taken shelter there for the week, with water but apparently no food. The fact that a 7-yo could hide out in Japanese military barracks, a few km from where he went missing, for a week when there was a country-wide search on for him doesn't say anything particularly reassuring about the internal security of their army.
