He is a coach not a player.
Basically the Article says Essendon players didn't take WADA black listed drugs. They were on a list of "maybe".
Essendon coach James Hird has been accused of injecting a WADA-blacklisted drug in a program where his players were given another substance anti-doping regulators now say should be banned.

Richard Inglis on 3AW just said the same thing.
It is not illegal for a coach to take banned substances. |
But if true, he may well be in a breach of the AFL code of conduct.
Would you be comfortable if Nathan Buckley took WADA banned substances even if the players did not? I wouldn't. _________________ Buzz

Why not? If the substances are legal and safe, what's the issue?
And the allegation against Hird (which he denies) is that he was injected in 2004. _________________ Well done boys! |

The allegation is actually what he did last year with Simon Goodwin, not in 2004. Some of these substances have not yet been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and others have been reported as "maybe" contravening WADA rules.
Its totally untenable that the head coach of a football club can take substances of a performing enhancing nature, that his players cannot. In that position, he has a duty of care and plays a central leadership role to the club let alone any health impacts on himself.
The culture from the outside seems if the allegations are true, is of poor governance and a relaxed attitude to the approach of substance taking. The AFL brand is being tarnished. They may be forced to take action independent of the ASADA investigation. _________________ Buzz

So, what about the kind of banned substances a coach might need to take for their health? Something like the drug Alistair Lynch needed permission to take for his CFS. Should coaches have to seek permission from the AFL for these as well?
I understand that it may not "look" good, but I don't see any real harm in a coach taking substances that are banned for players, especially the many substances that are perfectly fine to take when not seeking an unfair competitive advantage. _________________ Well done boys! |

I don't see what the big deal is?
Was he taking PEDs when he was playing, if so, then yes, he should be punished, but if he wasn't then I have no issues.

Could all be true. But I wonder if Dank mentioned Simon Goodwin because his name is already associated with gambling issues? |

Basically Hird is alleged to have taken anti-ageing drugs.
Something that 90% of the people living in Toorak do on a weekly basis. |

Same skit as he did in the first week of the Footy show. It has been done to death already. Still it will get a laugh. By the way, Sam gets the same anti-ageing treatments.

In an exclusive interview, the club's former sports scientist Stephen Dank confirmed he gave players an extract from pig's brain used to treat Alzheimer's, the first milk from a mother cow and a bark extract.
I'm a pig, no...
I'm a cow, no...
I'm a tree... Oh... I forget. |
