What's the odds the perpetrator was on psychiatric medication, like many of the young men in the U.S. who have been involved in mass shootings? More care with the prescription of these drugs may be more effective than gun control

There have been lever action shotguns since the 1800s, this whole episode is a massive beat up. Banning the Adler is stupid, claiming lever action firearms are 'rapid fire' is stupid.

More inner city trendies wetting their panties over a gun. Pathetic.

It's a beat up on two sides. Those you accurately describe, and those on the other side who see this as a thin edge to make yet more guns illegal.

Lever action is slightly faster to shoot repetitive shots than a pump action or bolt action but is still slower than a semi auto. It's the magazine size that should be at issue, not the action.

I'm quite aware that it's all a matter of degrees, but what bothers me is that a weapon that the government thought was sufficiently unsafe to warrant banning has now been let into the country because they needed to get another piece of legislation through.

Public safety is being compromised for, as far as I can tell, no good reason whatsoever. I can't say I'm thrilled about that.

Any hunter that requires more than two goes at killing his prey ain't much of a hunter at all.

No need for this weapon.

Lets go hunting feral pigs. You can use my double barrel, I'll take the level action.

No-one seems to have noticed the grubby trade-off involved. Politics at its worst.

Leyonhjelm blackmailed the government (yes, that's his own word for it, "blackmail") into this stupid pro-gun ruling by agreeing to renege on his support for a rule requiring that the Border Force must have an adult or guardian present when they take children's blood, saliva, and fingerprints. And the scumbag is proud of that.

That's called an honest politician. You don't think every single crossbencher ever has done the same thing? He's fighting for a three core principles of his party, liberty, right to self defence and the right to own firearms. Good on him.

If it was the greens 'blackmailing' the government for more wind farms you'd be slobbering all over it.

So you reckon the Border Force should take fingerprint, saliva and blood samples from children without an adult being present? FMD.

Leyonhjelm's a straight shooter (so to speak, lol), and I don't mind that at all – it's refreshing to see someone being so frank about parliamentary negotiations. But yeah, this is one thing I don't want to see him negotiating with the government, ever.
