Post subject: Victoria Lowest Ever Road Toll | |

There is the story...
However, there is one stat in that article that flabbergasts me the most.
First off, here is the breakdown. The bold red, is the stat that staggers me the most. How is it, in 2011, people still don't wear seatbelts! Same goes for the motor bike riders and their helmets...
Personally, I don't get it. You get in the car and put the seatbelt on, or get on a bike and put a helmet on!
The final road toll results show that in 2011 (data compared with 2010):
There were 129 deaths in metropolitan Melbourne, up from 125 in 2010;
There were 158 deaths in country Victoria, down from 163 in 2010;
Victoria recorded 5.1 deaths per 100,000 population compared to 5.91 in the rest of Australia in 2011;
There were 49 pedestrian deaths, an increase of 26 per cent;
People aged over 70 accounted for 16 pedestrian fatalities (32 per cent), 12 people killed were aged 80 or above (24 per cent);
Forty-nine fatalities (17 per cent) were motorcyclists, equal to 2010 but an increase of four on the five year average;
Five of the motorcyclists (13 per cent) were not wearing a helmet;
Of the eight fatalities involving cyclists, 50 per cent (four) were not wearing a helmet;
Heavy vehicles were involved in 38 fatal collisions (15 per cent), a decrease of 21 per cent;
Thirty-six (26 per cent) of drivers and passengers killed were not wearing a seatbelt. |

What makes me go wow is motor bike riders who wear shorts t-shirt and runners when riding... with a helmet. May aswell forget the helmet in that case.

A mate of mine is an ambo officer.
He tells me some crashes look like they have deliberately run into trees etc.
If you were that way inclined, you would probably deliberately leave the seat belt off. _________________ Born, Live and Die a Magpie |

I'm sure there are far more deaths on the road than the report says. I'm wondering if they leave off the ones, where it's plausible that they drove into a tree without a seatbelt on purpose. _________________ Heeeeeeeeeeeeeey, we want some Bayley! |

if they're only riding in 50-60kmhr zones, what's the difference between a motorcyclist in shorts, tshirt and runners and a cyclist in lycra? The gravel is just as rough.
It's when you get north of 60kmhr the difference kicks in. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

^ Difference is, a motor bike doing 50-60 is much diff to a bike rider in a 50-60 zone doing 20-30km.
Either way, in that 50-60km zone I wouldn't want to come off either of them.
Ok going down hill is different... I'll hand you that. _________________ Heeeeeeeeeeeeeey, we want some Bayley! |

Exactly. On a half decent cycle with gears, it's not hard to get up to 50kmph on the flat or on a slight downhill.
I've done the road from watsy to Macleod before, slightly down hill all the way, get into top gear and the cars aren't catching up.
Quite a buzz, until I have to peddle up hill fora bit
I'm shit on a cycle, but the speed is good when you get it wound up. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

So, let me bet this straight.
We have more cars than ever on our foads.
Our carts, in the main, are safer than ever.
We have recorded a low death toll.
Yet there is an increase in speed cameras, being set at places that don't have a "black" history.
Can any government still hide behind the "safety" excuse? |

Don't ever pick on others spelling again.
But otherwise, I agree completely. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |
