Very interesting article from The Australian:
Pies to help Blues
By Michael Davis
January 4, 2003
CASH-STRAPPED Carlton have accepted an offer from Collingwood president Eddie McGuire to play a legends match between the two clubs as the Blues fight back from the brink after their pre-Christmas announcement of an AFL record debt of $7.75 million.
Although proceeds from a legends match would only be a drop in the ocean given their massive debt, new Carlton president Ian Collins and his board are keen to build on the atmosphere and spirit that the day would generate.
McGuire said a spirit of co-operation between the competition's arch foes was indicative of the way clubs are prepared to help each other out in the modern era.
"While we hate Carlton and love to belt the hell out of them on the field, we don't want to see a great club like the Blues go out of existence," he said.
In a gentle swipe at the in-fighting that plagued Calton during and after the season, McGuire said: "Come to think of it, the Carlton players in the legends match will probably be trying to whack each other."
Several club champions became embroiled in the overthrow of former president John Elliott, including Ken Hunter and David McKay. Hunter quit the Elliott board in protest and joined the Collins ticket. McKay is on the new board.
The legends match is likely to be played at Optus Oval the week before Carlton and Collingwood square off in round one of the Wizard Cup pre-season competition.
The plan is to oppose former on-field foes against one another. Carlton's David Rhys-Jones on Magpie Denis Banks; Mike Fitzpatrick against Peter Moore in the ruck and Tom Alvin shadowing Peter Daicos.
Collins said Carlton appreciated the gesture. "We also had an offer from Richmond which was very generous, too," he said. "But I think we'll probably go with the Collingwood one."
Having trimmed nearly $2 million from the player payment bill for 2003 after a protracted wrangle with players and their agents, Collins has turned his attention to pruning costs across the board.
Asked last night if that included coach Denis Pagan, Collins said: "Nobody is immune."
Pagan crossed from the Kangaroos to Carlton at the end of the season, striking a three-year deal with the now deposed Elliott regime. It is believed Pagan signed for about $800,000 a season. His deal at the Kangaroos, signed three years ago, was more than $500,000 a year.
A more immediate problem for the Blues is the prospect of starting the season without ruckman Matthew Allan, who was the centre of a salary cap inquiry by AFL investigations officer Ken Wood.
There has been a suggestion that Allan may be fined and suspended from the first four matches of the season over an irregularity in the manner in which he was paid part of his contract last season.
Allan, who is recovering from a long-term injury, and his manager David Allison have maintained they have done nothing wrong. A decision is expected to be announced by AFL operations manager Andrew Demetriou next week.

Well they did help us get started as a club...then again they did rob us of a few premierships, you can't put a money value on that.
I'm with Ed, bugger em.

This thread is also happening on FTO at the moment. http://www.fromtheouter.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1042
and Here Comes Billy posted this quote -
"What's better than beating Collingwood by 10 goals in a Grand Final? Beating them by 5 points". George Harris, Carlton President after 1979 Grand Final.
Doesn't that say it all?
Let them learn. Let them suffer. I love the feeling of looking down on their hapless team from the top of the ladder.

In 20 years time, when we can still lord it over the filth supporters by saying, "We kept you from extinction" then any actions taken now will truly be seen to have reaped benifits for CFC.
The filth are not going anywhere as we are not finished wuth their sorry butts yet.

Yer help em out, just don't let them get back into making a profit. I don't want them to fold, they provided me with a great deal of entertainment over the year. Especially at the end of the season, it's great to see them in the s***. So why not help to keep them just on the up slightly and then watch them collapse again.

Good Idea...........BUT.........................................
.........would you shake hands with someone who has just run over your dog, would you be friendly to someone who has just stolen your wallet, would you be nice to the asshole who just broke into your house,etc,etc.......
Well, why start being nice to a club who thrives on being arrogant, they cannot recruit properly and earn a premiership the true way, instead they buy their premiership's. They didn't get the silvertail tag for being battlers. Ask yourself this, would they be helping us if the roles were reversed. No f$#ken way, let them 'suffer in their jocks!!!'
It's in the bag, the 2003 FLAG!!!

I'm dirty on McGuire for this. Carlton are scum and they have taken great murph and humour in some of this clubs lowest points.
George Harris commented after the 1979 Grand Final: "what is better than beating Collingwood by 60 points? Beating them by 1 point"
Anyone who knows about sportsmanship will tell you this is out of line. At Carlton this was widely accepted and shows what little character the club has.
The ghosts of Collingwood like old Jock, Syd and Harry would be turning in their graves about this action by the president.

Hate to say this, but they don't need our charity. The Carlton Football Club is big enough ... and UGLY enough ... with special emphasis on UGLY ... to look after itself.
And, if a bunch of silvertails like that can't sort out their financial woes ... then let 'em rot.
Their plight is nothing that a couple of dodgy deals on the stock exchange can't sort out.
