No home games in Sydney: McGuire

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has ruled out the prospect that the Magpies would move home games to Sydney.

The Pies have spent the past week in western Sydney growing the game and their brand as part of the AFL’s community camp program, but McGuire said on Friday that the club will not look to take a home game to Australia’s biggest city.

“Collingwood plays its home games in Melbourne,” McGuire stated emphatically.

“We are getting involved in the Sydney area not to diminish what we’ve done down here, as we’ve worked hard to get this position in place, but to enhance it. First and foremost, our sole intention is to look after the supporters of Collingwood Football Club in Melbourne.”

McGuire, who took over as Collingwood president when the club was at one of its lowest ebbs at the end of 1999 and has overseen a rebirth that saw the Pies in the grand final three years later, said the club was committed to its legion of supporters.

“We do everything predicated on the basis that we look after the homeland first and foremost. We’ve done deals with the MCG and the Telstra Dome ensuring an amount of games per year, which has been 18 so far, and we have also done deals where we have home and away social club facilities at both grounds."

McGuire pointed to the Magpies’ initiatives in improving facilities available to members over the past three years as an example of the club’s commitment to its fan base.

“Our supporters get the equivalent of 18 home games as far as facilities are concerned, so we have been very much doing that, and with Olympic Park coming on next year, we see a significant planned growth and a continuation of improved facilities over the next five years.

“The Collingwood Football Club belongs to its members and that is it, first and foremost. Everything that we do it predicated on building (the club) and making it better for our supporters.”

Can't tell you all how glad I am to read this press release.

The last thing we need is to lose home games. It is not as if we are struggling and have to do a pauperoos and shake a tin and sell a few home games to make ends meet.

Enough of this nonsense. Bring on the footy.

Go Pies! You are doing us Proud.
