Interested to see the final penalty (or is it) of the salary cap scandal. Is this too severe ??? , Not for Carlton but for the integrity of the Competition.
Personally I love beating a proud competitive club, rather than a whimpering half dead and blind dog. However on the other hand should I delight in the pain of the imbecile who last year let forth a 2 hour torrid of filth in my daughters ear as he laughed at our round 3 loss.
I hate Carlton, but love the fight; I just wonder if this will take the fight out of the dog.

I know which way I'm leaning !!!!

Your thoughts

Blues rocked by AFL penalty

The Carlton Football Club is reeling after the AFL handed down the toughest penalty in its history for salary cap breaches with new Blues president Ian Collins so shocked by the AFL Commission’s decision he now believes the entire future of his club is under threat.

The Blues have not only lost their prized two first selections in Sunday’s National AFL Draft but also their second and third round picks meaning their first selection will now not be until pick 45.

But it doesn’t end there for the Blues, who have also lost their first and second round selections in the 2003 National AFL Draft as well as the first pick in the this year’s pre-season draft on December 17.

This will not only cost the club the chance of recruiting future champions such as Brendan Goddard and Daniel Wells – who were certain to be chosen at number one and two by the Blues on Sunday – but robs new coach Denis Pagan of the chance to quickly re-build the club’s playing stocks after it finished 2002 with the first wooden spoon in the Blues’ history.

But it is the extent of the fines which have been imposed on Carlton for its latest salary cap breaches which have shaken the club’s new board.

As well as copping a fine of just over $57,000 – which was suspended from two years ago when the Blues were last found guilty of breaching the salary cap – the Blues have also been fined nearly an extra $850,000 bringing their total fines to close to $1 million or $930,000 to be exact.

And considering the club is believed to be on course to already post a financial loss of at least $500,000 in 2002 – there are legitimate concerns amongst the new Blues board that the club will be unable to pay the fine – which must be paid by December 31, 2003.

“A fine of this magnitude would push any club to the brink,” a shocked Carlton president Ian Collins said at the conclusion of the seven hour hearing into the Blues’ salary cap breaches.

The Blues were found guilty of three of the four charges they faced for making illegal payments to players.

The players weren’t officially disclosed but Collins referred to two “icons” of the club – believed to be Stephen Silvagni and Craig Bradley. The other case has been adjourned pending further investigation.

The offences were committed under the leadership of the club’s recently ousted board – led by the controversial former president John Elliott and comes after the club was found guilty of two previous salary cap breaches.

The AFL shrugged off suggestions it had been too harsh on Carlton with commission chairman Ron Evans describing the Blues’ latest salary cap breaches “as a deliberate, elaborate and sophisticated scheme to break the player payment rules.”

Evans said the scheme, which involved payments into secret trust accounts or to third parties was only detected following a lengthy investigation by the league’s investigator Ken Wood.

“This is their (Carlton’s) third breach of the (player payment) rules since 1998,” Evans said.

Evans said the salary cap and draft were fundamental to the success of the AFL competition adding “there is no room in our game for blatant cheating.”

And while he said he felt sympathy for Carlton supporters – whose hopes of seeing their side make a quick revival in 2003 now appear shattered – but said the commission had to consider all 16 clubs when handing down its decision.

“The Carlton members and supporters ought to feel betrayed by the actions of their club,” Evans said.

However the Blues have not ruled out challenging the AFL’s decision, even though there is no scope to do so under AFL rules meaning their only option would be to take court action.

New president Collins, while critical of the role the previous board played in breaching the salary cap – could barely contain his anger at the AFL after its decision was handed down in the early hours of Saturday morning.

“The penalties don’t fit the crime,” he said.

“This is a bloody-minded decision and relationships between the AFL and Carlton are strained to say the least.”

That was obvious when Carlton insisted on speaking to the media before the AFL following the league’s decision - much to the anger of AFL football operations manager Andrew Demetriou, who had to be restrained from entering the media conference room by the Blues’ communications manager Ian Coutts.

Collins said the decision would affect both the Blues’ finances and playing strengths and cast a cloud over the club’s preparations for the 2003 season.

“We’re extremely disappointed,” Collins said.

“This decision gives Carlton little incentive in 2003.”

But while Carlton’s entire future both on and off the field is now under threat – the decision to strip the Blues of their prized first two selections is great news for St Kilda and the Kangaroos.

Instead of having selections three and four respectively, those clubs will now have the prized first two picks meaning they have the choice of recruiting the talented Goddard, Wells or Steven Salopek, who are clearly the stand-out youngsters in this year’s draft.

Hehe...burn baby burn!

Here is the Age article 25/11/02;

Blues hit hard by AFL
November 23 2002

Carlton says it is on the brink of going out of business and will have difficulty fielding a team in the AFL competition next year after being fined $930,000 and being hit with heavy draft penalties last night.

Carlton received the fine, will lose both its number one and two picks in Sunday's national draft, plus its second and third round picks (numbers 31 and 34 overall).

It will also be excluded from the first round of December's pre-season draft, and will be banned from taking part in the first two rounds of the 2003 national draft.

Club president Ian Collins said the club would consider its legal options to challenge the AFL ruling, but was non-committal whether there was grounds to do so later today to prevent Sunday's draft from proceeding.

"A fine of this magnitude in the AFL competition, which is very fragile ... would put any club on the brink," an angered Collins said.

The AFL said there was no doubt Carlton was guilty of paying players under the table and thus breaching the salary cap in 2000 and 2001. Part of tonight's punishment included the imposition of penalties from a suspended sentence incurred in 2000.

The punishment was for three of the four cases, although the AFL refused to reveal exactly which ones.

One case was still being investigated. Carlton and the AFL's talks on punishment for the club's salary cap infringements had dragged on into the early hours today.

The Blues, led by Collins and chief executive Don Hanly, desperately argued the club's case with league chief executive Wayne Jackson, after the talks began at six o'clock on Friday. Carlton faced charges of rorting the salary cap, involving payments to four former players - Craig Bradley, Steven Silvagni, Stephen O'Reilly and Fraser Brown. Carlton was arguing only four former directors - John Elliott, Wes Lofts, Barry Stones and Kevin Hall - knew of the alleged under-the-table payments and as they had all resigned during the battle for board control over the past two months, the new administration should be given a fresh slate.

Carlton was already under a suspended sentence for breaching the cap in 2000

It's Carlton so the fine and loss of draft picks are justified.
Yet how can it be justified that St. Kilda will have yet another number 1 draft pick and even worse Brisbane have the 3rd pick.

Because we live in an age of football socialism where the mediocre are rewarded. If the competition was played on its merits the Saints would be out of their depth and inevitably heading for extinction. It's a choice between fairness and practicality if we want the comp to survive.

Look at it this way; would you rather beat Carlton in round 2 in front of 80,000 people or in front of 40,000?
Carlton got what it deserved but a little bit of flexibility on the part of the AFL would've been appropriate.

Man Oh Man are Carlton up the creek. I feel pretty sorry for Pagan though , he couldv'e had a real crack at it. We will see how he goes this time round. However look at us now compared to 3 to 4 years ago. We were in debt , we had dud players, we got duped in a couple trades, we even had our first pick ,in Danny Roach, giving us no return and we had Tony Shaw . So what Carlton is going through is not far from what we had to endure and as long as they don't go extinct well lets try and win afew games against them (they have beaten us more than we've beaten them). We can laugh at them because they will get through this and they also need another wooden spoon to catch up to us as well . BOTTOM LINE ENJOY THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS AND RUB IT IN !!!!!!

Are we all seriously going to sit back and say "Yeah, good one!"??? I hate Carlton as much as anyone else does, but that fine and penalty was nothing short of ludicrous. Yeah great, let Carlton suffer. We all want that.

But look at the big picture. Don't be naive. What is the AFL doing and what is their plan for the future? Surely everyone can agree a healthy and successful Carlton is good for the competition and financially benefitial to ALL teams. Why would the AFL go so hard on them, and what's to stop them with their ulterioir motives to cut us down at the first chance they get???

I smell something fishy....

Colours are an illusion. There is only black and white.
