I think there is more pressure on you to draft a 100+ gamer when you have the top 10 picks then when you get further down. Some champions go early, but in the end its how hard blokes are willing to work that determines whether they are assets or not.
My HSC co-ordinator handed me this before the last month of year 12 in 1988:
"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not. Nothing's more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not. Unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not. The world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are all powerful."
People who are drafted early have expectations and not all handle it well or think that they have made it. Others feel that they have a point to prove because they are drafted low, and become heroes in the process. Have a look at Dunkley (57), Burnsy (90), King (43), Southern (92), Brent Harvey (45), Licka (24), Brad Scott (85), Russell Robertson (6, Byron Pickett (67), Stunner (55), Hay (36), Jason Johnson (2, Goodes (43), Scotland (44), Ling (3, Lonie (34), Campbell Brown (32), Medhurst (56).
Talent is not always in the beep test or the vertical leap, its in how you continue to develop. Our great recruiters could again grab some unknown or underrated kid who becomes a hero of our club.
