I'm just bumping this because the whole point was to draw attention to - and provide - the link to a good article about Phil for all those who, like me, loved watching him play. There are plenty of other threads where you can bag him, if you still feel the need, two generations after the event. |

Don't think it's a case of bagging him Pies4 it's just a simple case of those of us who were around at the time know him for the head case that he was.
Great player and could have been an all time great but had zero ability to put up with a little attention and less discretion than Warney when retaliating. |

As brilliant as Carman briefly was, he played 66 games and no Premierships. How did he win life Membership? What is the criteria? Just asking.

Phil Carman was no angel but was not a head case.
The seeds for his downfall were sown in his first couple of years at the pies. He was the tail that wagged the dog then.
He trained like an athlete and his preparation was head and shoulders above what the coaches were asking of the players at the time.
Hafey came in and dragged the rest of the team up to scratch. 77 was sensational for Phil and the team until the Tuck suspension.
Yes he is responsible for that but I'll always believe it wouldn't have gone so pear shaped if the club had it's act together at the time.
To clear him after 78 was ludicrous. He played a blinder against the blues from the bench in a cut throat final and was gone a game later. Vice captain sacked. Why Club why?

He won a Copeland Trophy. That, I understand, was the specific reason. |
