Magpie hits the books
By IAN ROYALL
31oct02

FOR Collingwood footballer Mark McGough, preparing for his VCE exams is a bit like getting ready to play in front of 80,000 at the MCG.

"Study and training are similar things -- it's one form of practice or preparation," McGough said.
The Northcote High student is one of about 50,000 Year 12s counting down to tomorrow when the three-week exam period starts.

And whether it's books or boots, the concentration level is equally important, McGough said.

"When you're either playing footy or doing an exam you just focus so hard that you forget where you are and just concentrate on what you are doing."

The 18-year-old is swotting for exams in English, international studies and further maths.

The demands of schoolwork meant McGough stayed behind in Melbourne while his Magpie teammates flew to Mexico for their end-of-season trip.

"I had a few days of celebrations with the guys, but then I was back to school because I had practice exams that week.

"Hopefully, there will be plenty more footy trips I can go on."

The rookie will get just one week's break between exams and pre-season training.

"After the last exam, I've booked a taxi to pick me up and take me straight to the airport so I can spend a week with my brother in Townsville."

A part-time arts or journalism course is the aim for next year.

McGough hopes for a tertiary entrance score of about 80, helped by the fact he achieved good marks in physical education studies while at school in Yarrawonga last year.

Mark I know what you're going through as I'll also be hitting the English exam tomorrow morning at 9am.
Best of Luck to you, and all the other Yr12's around the state.

Good luck to them indeed. I have a few year 12 students working for me and they're relatively cool about exams. I think it's because, like most things in life, they know that if you put in the work, the rest takes care of itself.

And if you don't get in to the course you want, don't stress. Life seems to have a (sometimes slow and confusing, granted) way of working itself out.
