Ten News has just reported that Jason McCartney is in a critical but stable condition. I thought his injuries were minor. As with all the victims that are fighting for their lives and not just the footballers involved my prayers are with them all.

there have been several conflicting reports on jason unfortunately. CH7 and 9(i think) suggested he has 3rd degree burns and is fighting for his life while CH10 said it was 'only' 1st degree burns and he's relatively ok. jason gave up his seat on a plane home to someone he felt was in greater need of it(a class act on his part regardless of his condition).

he would be in ICU even with second degree burtns if they had teh space - it's just a lot easier to keep "sterile" than the wards - but I heared he's pretty bad. He's at teh Alfred which is world class so he'll be ok but may never fully recover to play footy again, psychologcally it'd be terrible too. It's nasty stuff.

My best mates girlfreind is treating Jason McCartney at the Alfred. Says he's lucky to be alive, his legs are burnt but only 2nd degree. His hands are severely burnt. She believes he will not play football again due to the amount of time it will take to recover, and the fact that going out in the sun will be a problem.

Very sad, even though I don’t like him for walking out on us, I wish him a speedy recovery.

I must admit I have a personal dislike for the guy but this is different. I hope he makes a full recovery and plays good footy again. This is not how a career should end. Make a speedy recovery Jason so we can watch you hip and shoulder Carey into kingdom come.

Footballer's condition worsens
October 17, 2002

AFL player Jason McCartney's condition has been upgraded to critical as he fights injuries suffered in the Bali bombings.

McCartney, 28, has burns to more than 50 per cent of his body, including on his arms, legs, back and hands.

The Kangaroos defender's condition was elevated from serious to critical after he deteriorated overnight, a spokeswoman for The Alfred Hospital said.

from news.com.au
hope he gets through it

i hope he gets better.
i doubt he will be able 2 play footy again though, hes already 28 and wont be playing next year. and this is if he lives, he might not. i hope he does though, what a sad way to end a career, which is the likely outcome.

The latest news on Jason is that his condition is deteriorating. I hope he pulls through, as I do all the other injured.

Kangaroos statement on Jason McCartney
Geoff Walsh
Kangaroos Football Club
4:20:12 PM Thu 17 October, 2002

The following is a statement from Kangaroos chief executive Geoff Walsh issued at 3.20 pm AEST, October 17, 2002...

I understand there have been press reports today regarding the upgrading of defender Jason McCartney's condition from serious to critical overnight.

I would just like to assure all of the Mazda Kangaroos supporters, members and other well-wishers, that while Jason's change of condition is of some concern, it is not unexpected.

Our medical department has been in regular contact with the specialists at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, and have informed us that this situation was anticipated.

The medical staff at the Alfred had been monitoring Jason closely to ensure they acted as soon as any change occurred.

As such he has received the best possible care immediately in the Intensive Care Unit and his prognosis remains positive.

Our understanding is that Jason was having some problems with his breathing yesterday, a normal reaction to burns of this nature, and that that has been behind his upgrading from serious to critical, as he now requires more personalised nursing care.

At this stage we believe Jason is still expected to be in Intensive Care for a couple of days before being moved to the Burns Unit at The Alfred.

Our medical department will maintain their contact with the hospital and keep the Club up-to-date on any changes.

I have also had the opportunity to visit fellow defender Michael Martyn today and would like to say he is doing well and is just thrilled to be back at home with his family.

Again I would just like to ask everyone to respect the privacy of both Jason and Michael's family as they come to terms with the events of the past week.

We thank everyone for their support and concern.

Geoff Walsh
CEO,
Mazda Kangaroos

Note: With Sunday being a national day of mourning for those who have been so deeply affected by the events in Bali, if there are any members or supporters wishing to mark the day in some way, our chaplain, Father Gerard Dowling, will be involved in a service at St Patrick's Cathedral, East Melbourne.

He will be assisting with 11am Mass on Sunday, and there will be quite a focus at that service on the events in Bali last weekend.

Anyone wishing to attend is more than welcome. St Patrick's Cathedral is on the corner of Gisborne Street and Cathedral Place, East Melbourne.

****

all the best jason
