Post subject: the great servant of the club post!Reply with quote

i keep reading the same line in a number of posts "that such and such is a great servant of the club and has bled black and white for the Pies. I say big f...g deal!!!!!!! it is no reason why such and such should get a game! Loyal servants, players who are past it, well disciplined players who can't cut the mustard keep bringing the Club down. It is A BRUTAL GAME - the only reality is a premiership not sentiment. You deserve a game on your current form not your past form. Currently loyalty to players is a negative for the club - loyalty to your fans and past players and admin is absolutely a given. Get real Pies!

I agree that there is little room for sentiment in the game, but I disagree that sentiment plays any role in the selection of players like O'Bree, Lockyer et al. They are players who add a considerable amount of experience and cool-headedness to the team, along with their own particular strengths as football players. They are also, as hard as it is for you to believe, good players.

There might be an argument that showing loyalty to long-serving players also adds to team stability and morale within the playing group. But these are all things that the selection committee take into account every week, as hard as it may be for you to believe.

At least the people who add that preface to their comments show due respect to players who have, indeed, been great servants of the club. Perhaps you and some of the others on this site could start doing the same.

no one wants to say its over but thats life!!

I still think obree has a bit more to give, i hope that tarks does too, and that leon finds form real soon but....september is very tempting this year

The club IS whatever players happen to be lining up for us on the day, and perhaps the coaching staff. If you don't support them, you support nothing but a theoretical concept.

Yes David I have been supporting a theoretical illusion for 50 years. My God how could i get get it so wrong!. But David we are not that far apart the players represent the club and on that day I support them - it is just the next thursday - selection day is where we disagree

I trust our coaching staff and selection committee to know what they're doing. They may not always get it right, but they are far more knowledgeable and have far more access to information than we do.

It's an interesting question, though. What are you supporting if you aren't supporting the players? The jumper? The board? Once you take the 22 men out on the field out of the equation, it all becomes a little abstract.

Absolutely, and the simple fact is we went in with a winning formula, including a lot of young players and some experience.
