Thanks Joffa, hard to believe it was 25 years ago. Whenever I hear or read anything that mentions Noble Park my brain goes straight to Darren Millane. Hope his Mum Denise and the rest of the Millane family are well. _________________ Bob Rose....the measuring stick of humanity |

Great player. Probably in the top 5 in that 1990 team. |

Happy it being indefinitely retired but if u were going to give it to a kid probably not many better timely opportunities than Callum Brown ? |

Perhaps Brown could have his father's number? He was one of the greatest players ever to take the field for Collingwood and the number really should be vacant next year. |

Two options if it's to be returned. Make it the captains number, (how good would it be seeing the number 42 accepting the premiership cup) or alternatively hand the honour to the Darren Millane Perpetual Memorial Trophy winner each season. |

I agree, its up to his family, but I think its time to bring back No. 42. Hawthorn lost peter crimmins tragically, rested his number for about ten years, now Mitchell wears it. If I was one of his family I would love to see his number back on the field in black and white, and if there is some form of an afterlife, I reckon Pants would want it back on the field too. _________________ Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor, but because we cannot satisfy the rich.

Retiring numbers forever or doing what we currently do giving no 35 to the first draft pick for a year is bullshit.
Put them both back, choose kids who can live up to the number and let them make their own history in it. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Lol! He was the architect that intimidated and put the shits through most of the teams we played that year. Make no mistake, he was the key, and Daicos and co simply iced the cake.
The only blokes who even remotely gave him a decent contest were Dipper and Greg Anderson. _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

the sentiment was admirable but agree that the application of it is rubbish. _________________ Purveyor of sanctimonious twaddle. |

Okay, let's just give #42 to one of our plethora of elite ball slaughterers and be done with it then? _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

we're talking about the #35. besides, your premise is stupid.
on the #42, it's been 25 years. time to bring the number back into circulation. _________________ Purveyor of sanctimonious twaddle. |

I never know what to think about this issue. On the one hand, there is the clearly inspirational player, who was obviously a charismatic leader.
On the other, I think his career is magnified a little by the tragedy of his early, self-inflicted death. I saw every Melbourne-based game from 1988-1991, as I lived in Australia then. He was a damn good and important player. But honestly, I judge his contribution to 1990 to be lower than Daicos, Brown, Wright (the great unsung hero of 1990) Craig Kelly and Scotty Russell. He was good. But I think the glasses are a little rose-tinted and the eyes a little tear-stained.
Finally, I can only feel disquiet about the way he died. We talk a lot about undisciplined acts on the field. He was driving fast with a blood alcohol reading of 0.32. The fact that he did not kill an innocent person is something to be grateful for. That is what an undisciplined act looks like when it really matters. It was not a different age for drink-driving. Even then driving way over the limit was considered a serious and dangerous offence.
I miss watching him, and I admired him as footballer and a leader. But I can never quite feel the reverence. _________________ Two more flags before I die!
