Scott Thompson is an absolute gut running superstar midfielder. Not many clubs have anyone who can run with him to reduce his influence on the game. But after Marty's fantastic role shutting down one if the competition's other gut running midfielders in Stanton, could he get a similiar role this week?
I know Wellers often gets the run with role, but with Swanny missing there is a spot in the midfield rotations, and Wellers certainly has the skills to step up.
Anyone else think Clarke on Thompson would be a great matchup?

I like it. In fact, I like Marty in the middle of the ground better than I like Marty in the backline, so it's a win-win.

And Wellingham is running nicely into form now - he came back quietly and didn't do a lot straight up, but he's building his form week by week, a little better every game, so he's ready for the responsibility. I think he actually goes better in the heavy traffic than he does when he's got an outside role.

The other big in for us is Thomas. Yes, he played last week against Geelong and worked his arse off, but lacked that fine edge of touch that makes him so dangerous. He will be better for the run and will go a fair way towards making up for the loss of Swan.

I reckon we can win this one. It's going to take a massive effort, but I reckon we can do it.

Cannot go with him pace wise. I agree with the OP.
Thompson is a better gig for Marty.

The question is will Marty's Dangerfield roll be available in Hiss's new Hiss and Chips Van?

I Marty's run with role on Stanton he didn't actually play midfield, he came in off the wing and followed Stanton around the ground.

the question is, which of Thompson and Dangerfield is best around the ground (including stoppages not in the centre) and send him to them, relying on our midfield to win the ball at centre bounces.

Thompson isn't quick, is strong and has great endurance. He's a lot more inside than Stanton which makes it more difficult to tag him but Marty could do the job around the ground limiting his link up play.

He could also do the same job on Dangerfield.

Back Marty in. He will never let you down. I am a big fan of the Irish after seeing Denny O'Brien (played by Gerard Kennedy) in the wonderful Australian mini series Against the Wind.

Marty is a champion and Collingwood is a better Club for his presence.

I'd put him on Sloane who is more of the outside winger which Clarke can shut out, similar to Stanton.

I don't think Marty would do as well on an inside mid like Thompson or Dangerfield.

Back our midfield in one on one vs theirs. No tag required.

The question is, who will they put on Pendles and Sidey who are far and away our best two mids this year??

And who will stop Beams? and Thomas? and Wellers? and Blair?

exactly.

Pies by 47 points.

I'm glad there are a few here who recognise Thompson as a gun. Doesn't get the credit he deserves, outside of Adelaide.

I'd get somebody to follow Thompson myself. I don't think we can shut off Dangerfield.

Clarke did a brilliant job on Stanton, give him Thompson too.

They could do what they did a few years ago (cant remember the year) in an elmination final against the crows at AAMI and play Maxy on Thompson.
It worked then and i dont see why it cant work now.
Might get slammed for these but really Goldy swings down back and plays on their other tall, maxy takes thompson and Marty runs with Dangerfield. Marty may not have the speed of dangerfield but his determination will be 120% and has the endurance to go with him.
