Probably because they stop handing them out around the age of 9 (that's the netball age).
And I'm pretty sure the youngest athlete is at least 16
There is certainly nothing wrong with participation medals for youngsters. _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

Hehehe, it's pretty cool! I say 'subtitles on' 'volume up' and knowing hubby's expertise with such things, it will be a year before he can stop me!

How do people usually respond to that? Is that what you meant to say? |

Whatever netball is hardly a World let alone an Olympic sport.
Participation medals are a feel good wank and the thread is I believe " what made me laugh" and make me laugh it did! _________________ “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” |

Really? You consider participation medals for young children learning a new sport, getting out there, and having a go, to be a feel good wank! Well that's just sad!
My kids still have theirs, they also have their footy, gymnastics, dancing, basketball, participation medals, along side their many 'grown up" trophies and awards.
Some kids just never excel at sport, (or anything else), what's wrong with a bit of encouragement at junior level? For some kids, that's all they will get. _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

^ what's wrong with a bit of encouragement and support for participation without the need for handing out an irrelevant medal or a ribbon?
What is sad is the need to give out awards for participation not achievement - that is just bollocks and more for the parents than the kids.
You don't get an award or reward for just participating in life _________________ “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” |

Where is the harm in handing out a bit of encouragement in the form of a medal? How about the special needs kid that was on my 9 and under team?
Maybe you should ask a kid wether it's for them or their parents. I've got plenty of pics of my junior teams all proudly displayed their participation medals in 9 and under.
And I have all my (adult) obstacle racer medallions on display in my gym, pathetic? Not really. How many 52 year olds do you know who have completed a 9klm race up a mountain in the winter snow, with jump over, crawl under obstacles chucked in for good measure? Or 5 X 7klm commando courses?
How about all those bits of paper you get for completing a course? Be it mechanics, nursing, midwifery, should you only get one if you get the top mark?
Winning is always fun, but the important messages in life come from having a go. _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

^ You don't get bits of paper of any worth for just attending a course and if you do then it ain't worth the paper it is printed on - it's just a shite "participation" waste of paper and printer ink - the requirements for getting said bit of paper are not to just to show up and participate you have to demonstrate profiency by way of exam or practical based assessment.
I know a shipload of people older than 52 who like to spend their time challenging themselves physically - good for you and them that's a personal decision - sorry but I'm not overly impressed can't see the big deal myself.
It might be " feel good" but handing out medals for just "participating" is teaching a generation that just participating is enough - it ain't and it sure as hell doesn't teach them to cope when things don't go their way personally or professionally!! _________________ “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” |
