That's completely bizarre. The strangest thing I've ever seen in the aftermath of a disaster. At no time during the toll count did we ever have an accurate number.

10 years today since the Black Saturday bushfires.

It's an important day to remember the 173 people who lost their lives, and to those who were in some way affected by the fires.

I remember that day for a few reasons.

1. It was fkn hot. 46 in Melbourne.
2. My washing machine died and I had to go out in the heat, buy a new one, lug it home and replace the old one full of water with the new one. Needed several beers after that.
3. Roll up to work on Monday to hear the horror stories of people I worked with who'd lost houses, family and friends.

shit day all round. Sad

Sorry about the appliance, Stui. Plenty of people on the planet but it’s hard to find quality whitegoods.

hah, cheers P4S.

It's curious but it's the washing machine that makes me remember that day. I've been through plenty of days as hot or hotter and heard innumerous personal horror stories over the years, but combine those with the PITA involved in replacing the washing machine on the day and it sticks in my memory.

You'll be glad to know, the one I bought that day is still going strong 10 years later Wink

Can certainly relate to 1 and 3.

It was actually 46.4C, which was the hottest recorded temperature in Melbourne since records have been recorded since 1857.

I remember school being very sombre on the Monday, and the teachers actually held a special assembly to address what had happened and offered counselling for those who needed it.

Weirdly, I remember the sense of relieve when the cool change arrived in late afternoon, and we played West Coast in a NAB Cup match on the Saturday night and most of us were none the wiser as to what was happening in regional Victoria. It was only after the practice match concluded that news broke of the fires devastating communities and towns such as Kinglake and Marysville.
