WOW! Cleaning out my room yesterday and guess what i found?
A movie called 'THE CLUB' staring Jack Thompson, Graham Kennedy, Frank Wilson, Harold Hopkins, John Howard & Alan Cassell.
A movie set around 1980 and the Collingwood Football Club! Even players from that era are in the movie!!
Heres the blurb:
It's tough enough on the Australian Rules Football field, but in the boardroom it's a battle ground! In this club nobody plays the rules.
Outside the fans a cheering the high marks and the low tackles as their team battles towards the premiership. Inside, the executives are wheeling and dealing, back slapping and back stabbing.
The club buys a talented young player, Geoff, for a record sum of money and, not suprisingly, the team members do not like their new star. Friction develops immediatley, even with the captain whose own playing days are numbered. Geoff expresses his resentment by lack of effort and indifference. Game after game is lost.. until Geoff begins to realise that there is more at stake than just his own career - that what matteres to others, their pride and even their own existence, is bound up with the success of the team.
Man! wouldnt it be something if they made 'The Club 2' lol!!!

Ted: Whos's on strike?
Danny: The whole team. Except Geoff Hayward. It will give him a chance to show what a real champion he is.
Players from the film that were players in real life include Rene Kink, Ronnie Wrymouth, Ray Shaw. Great film and great play.
Geoff Hayward was based on Phil Carman im pretty sure.

Blimey.....kepp it handy.I remember some months ago, there were a few people looking for the movie, and the ABC quoted $150:00 for a copy.
I think Dr.Alf was one looking for it and there were a couple of others.
Itis regarded as a CLASSIC Now.
Good luck with it and keep it handy.
I shall get a blank and send it to you to get a copy.

Yep. Great movie.
And what about the brilliant performance by Lou Richards as himself ... the greatest footy commentator of all time.
(by the way, PeterWH, I don't think I was one of the people looking for a copy ... but I love it anyway)

A classic, u would not get as many players these days in a movie of the same standard these days. it was not only a goood collingwood movie, its a classic australian film...and it was not fictional either, board members were arseholes to each other. This is until Eddie come along!
