Lou started with No 21 1946 - 1949. He switched to No 2 in 1950 and when he became skipper, he went to No 1 1953-55

I think players numbers changed quite a bit in those years...Capt, vc and dvc got 1, 2, 3 and the rest were done alphabetically..that system was still going in some form up to the late 60's at least...was a pain changing your number verey year as we seemed to have a diff captasin every couple of years. Don't know when the practice officially stopped, but Ray shaw was the first skipper I can recall who kept his 'old' number, though I stand to be corrected on that one. The old CFC website had a list of who wore what number down the years, but that section was 'lost' in the telstra changeover...

Speaking of numbers. Does anyone know the REAL reason why all players were forced by the VFL to wear different numbers for the 1958 GF...
Think only one player wore his number that day, Gabba..

The REAL reason?
Not sure.
But the official reason, as far as I'm aware, was that one of the local newspapers, possibly The Sun, published the numbers the day before. The VFL was worried that this would result in reduced sales of the Footy Record, so they forced the teams to change their numbers. The only reason Ray Gabelich got to wear his usual number was because he was so big that they couldn't find another jumper big enough for him.
In those days the Footy Record wasn't much more than just a list of players and their numbers. People generally only bought it for that reason.
