How do you stop a team that has won 36 of their last 38 games? Well, not very easily as the Western Bulldogs found in their round 16 clash with Geelong. But, despite going down to the Cats by 61 points that day was not a disgraceful effort and the Dogs are still very much in Premiership contention. But one thing still stands in their way: Geelong.
But, my AFL betting friends, having said that this mountain of a task has been climbed successfully in recent years by the Bulldogs. Keep in mind they have won 3 of their last 6 matches against Geelong by an average of 19 points.
The Bulldogs have already locked themselves in for a place in the 2nd Qualifying final against Hawthorn. Win that and they go straight to week three where they will play the winner of the 1st semi final for a spot in the illustrious Grand Final. If the Bulldogs do make it through they will not have to play Geelong until that final week in September, the premiership game.
Comparing the stats between the Cats and Dogs there are a few things that stand out in averages recorded this year. The Cats skills are so good that they wait until options are free, rather than blazing away. The Cats average 36 more disposals than the Hawks, but also less contested marks. The Dogs average more kicks and have a higher kick-to-handball ratio, while the Cats run and carry, racking up the handballs. But surprisingly the Dogs have lower disposals per goal average and better accuracy in front of goal.
But, as we know, the game is won in the midfield and that is where Geelong excels. But, punters, remember this. The Dogs have averaged more first possessions, more clearances and more contested possessions. However, Geelong clearly beat them in the one percenters and inside 50 stakes.
The Bulldogs have some work to do, and some time to do it before they next play Geelong. In all it would appear the Dogs are very evenly matched to the reigning premiers. But to beat Geelong the tactic is simple: put good tags on the Cats guns, get in hard and win the ball.
And the message to punters wanting to have an AFL bet on anyone stopping the Cats? It is not an impossible task.

Personally can only see the hawks beating them, they should have won the other night. The reason Buddy, the x factor, this guy is a freak, unstoppable when in full flight, which is often, if he kicks straight come grand final he'll kick 10 and lead them to victory. Oh yeah a guy named Roughhead isn't bad either as well as Hodge, Mitchell, Sewell, Williams,Croad,Bateman etc.
