He said if he ever see's O'Dea he'll slill spit in his face, and this is tweenty years on.

His exact words to me was "He karati kicked him in the head, when he wasn't expecting it."

I'm sure that O'Dea will still be feeling crap about it.

But its a sad story for our great club.

It wasnt a kick to the head.

It was a punch to the back of the head that knocked him out before he hit the ground.

He was bleeding from his ear and from his eye as can be seen from the photo.

What he might be mixing up it up with is that after JG was on the ground a St Kilda "champion" touched greening with his foot as if he was an animal to see if he would stir.

I wont mention who that player was, but he was much feted.

Thats what i was told, you can be kicked anywhere in the head, Doesn't make a difference where the blood is coming from, it could be a kick or a pounch.

I wouldnt know, I wasn't even born back then (Not even conceived).

Just stating something i was told, and he is the only eyewitness i have ever heard about.

This was such a tragic thing to have happened, and as Magpie Greg's story tells, all fans were in shock and way more concerned for the health of "The Racehorse" than any retaliation. I so remember the dog act of that little St Kilda player of giving John a prod with his foot, (this amounts to kicking in my eyes) and have hated St Kilda ever since that day, even more than 1966!

Well said Kaylene! Sentiments those of us who remember the day all share.

Good stuff talking about one of the best ever at our Club.
John Greening had the most beautiful skills, so smooth, top class.
That chop to the head wasn't good old biff, it was a cowardly sniper act.
That disgusting mean act changed the course of history.
Greening's life was a pale shadow of itself after that dark ugly day.
It put Greening on life-support, to struggle to get back on his feet to walk again, to re-learn everything, to talk, even to put spoon to mouth to feed himself, let alone play footy.
O'Dea & his snivvly Club got off way too lightly.
Too upsetting.

Unfknblvbl!!!!

I'd never really minded St Kilda, thought they were ok, didn't mind if they were doing well, as long as it wasn't against us!!
Well!!! That has all changed!!
I'd never heard of John Greening or the incident before now (all happened a year before I was born) and let me tell you - I wish the Saints the worst of luck for their future and will never now have a kind word to say about them!!
Fancy even mentioning giving that thug a place in their Hall of Fame. Doesn't that say a lot for that disgusting club's history.... Great history to be proud of!!
They can get stuffed.
GO PIES YOU BETTER BEAT THOSE FILTHY PIGS!!!!!!

Just spoke to my Dad (Pies man) & asked if he'd heard of John Greening? Oh yeah, he said, should've won us a brownlow, champion, no 22 etc, then told the story Magpie Greg posted here.
Then added that he "almost got killed at the footy a couple years later". Turns out he went to a Pies vs Saints game with a couple who were both Saints members, so they were sitting in the St Kilda members section. As St Kilda ran onto the ground, O'Dea ran out and Dad yelled "You mongrel O'Dea" and got jeered and abused by the whole section. His 2 Saint friends had to stand up for him, got quite heated.
Just goes to show that even back then when it was still fresh in everyone's mind, the Saints couldn't see anything wrong with that thug and his act of thuggery!!
As I said previously - unfknblvbl!!!
We better win this week!!

Thanks for the link to that article Dave the Man. So good that young Collingwood people are hearing about it for the first time. Greening was a lost champion of the game - may have won two or three Brownlows (he was so fair). Probably would have won us a premiership or two as well. A Hall of Famer.

How did you like this quote from the article though?
"Greening was unconscious for 24 hours and St Kilda's Jim O'Dea subsequently was disqualified for 10 weeks. Both of them victims of a bygone era, a period when the culture decreed the best players in the opposition were fair game."

Excuse me you bastards, Jimmy O'Dea a "victim"??? Evil or Very Mad Is that a sick joke or what? There was one victim on that fateful day, and one lowlife thug. You tell me which one was which.

Go Pies on Friday night! Stick it right up 'em!

To call Jim O'Dea a victim is so WRONG.

It's excusing his behaviour as innocent 70s Biffo and it's excusing StK for honouring him.

NO, he knew what he was doing and StK backed him.

It was FILTH. Not silly nonsense biff stuff.

O'Dea should've been jailed.

It's too upsetting. Such wrongdoing, such injustice.

So much was taken from John Greening. I hope that he has found peace within himself. But I fear that as justice was never delivered, that Greening still has his demons to contend with.

Just so we never forget, here is a picture of the thug as a young player.

You can get an enlargement at: http://www.fullpointsfooty.net/images/JODeaStKilda.jpg

Wonder what he looks like today?
