Blues a laughing stock: Southby

Carlton great Geoff Southby has continued his attack on Blues president John Elliott and powerbroker Wes Lofts, citing the need for the club to take a new direction.

“The way I see it, Carlton is becoming the laughing stock of the AFL in the way it’s going backwards at a million miles an hour,” Southby said on Sport 927 this morning.

“There needs to be a new direction in the way the club is approaching its marketing strategy, to rebuild its membership. The evidence there is that its membership is in decline.

“The image that is being projected by the current leaders is not conducive to bringing on young families and young people into the club.’’

Southby reiterated his weekend call for Elliott and Lofts to resign, saying that while this was his personal point of view, he believed he represented a great proportion of the Carlton family including supporters.

The dual premiership full-back hinted several board members were being stifled by the regime led by Elliott and Lofts.

“I think there is some good people on the board, but they are not getting the opportunity to provide some leadership,” Southby said.

Southby said he would encourage former teammate Mike Fitzpatrick to stand for president if he was in a position to do so.

“Mike Fitzpatrick is a very capable man and has been a great Carlton contributor on the field,” Southby said.

On Sunday Colonial Stadium chief executive Ian Collins, a former Carlton player and chief executive, ruled himself out as a contender for the Blues president’s job.

After Sunday's 28-point loss to Fremantle at Subiaco Oval, Carlton sits at the bottom of the ladder on 1-9 and is firm favourite with bookmakers to "win" its first wooden spoon.

Ohh, I usually don't take pleasure in others pain, but this time I just can't help myself!!

Carlton for wooden spooners!!!

Gotta love it!
I hope they get flogged every week for the rest of the year and end up in unimaginable turmoil.

BTW: Is Southby dark on not being named their fullback of the century?

About time they got theirs.
As long as we beat them next time round.
Unfortunately, at the moment, we have the dubious honour of being the only team beaten by Carlton this year.

Sung to the tune of "Those Old Navy Blues;

"We are the wooden Spoons
We are the all great Wooden Spoons
We're the team, that drafts the old hacks
We're the only team with just 1 win
We love to whinge about
All our injuries
To our shithouse list
And as the old band keeps playing
About the shithouse all dark blues."

It's about time. And the usual comment by Blues supporters, 'atleast we have never finished last', will no longer be relevant.
