Collingwood ruckman Steven McKee is enjoying some of the finest form of his career, helping the Magpies to fifth place on the AFL ladder after nine rounds. With the expectations of Collingwood’s return to finals at an all time high, McKee’s life outside of football is helping him keep that pressure in perspective.
McKee spends every Tuesday at Epworth Medical Centre working with victims of road accidents through the club’s association with the TAC, and the experience has helped McKee put priorities in their place.
“You might have a bad week and not get a kick, and the coach stuck into you. Then you go there and see these people and what they’re going through is a life changing event. They are all so positive, and you walk away scratching your head thinking – ‘what am I complaining about?’” McKee told afl.com.au’s The big ask.
“We work with people that have had motor accidents and help them with their recovery. A lot of people have trouble walking due to the injuries and a lot of (their rehab) is what we do, like strengthening through the core, so we can help out a little bit, and I think they like having footballers around.
“There are a lot of kids down there and it probably brings the spirits a little higher. We enjoy it and they enjoy it and it has worked well.”
While many are predicting that Collingwood can order their finals’ tickets now, McKee says the Magpies are looking at each game as an opportunity to garner more than wins.
“I think we’ve won a little respect and we’re just continuing to try to win that respect every week we come out to play,” he said.
