Picken to pick up a retro Copeland

A decade after the AFL decided to award retrospective Brownlow medals, the Magpies are set to do the same with the award they reckon is better than a Brownlow – the Copeland Trophy.

Collingwood has decided to award former champion defender Billy Picken a second club best and fairest for his tie with Ray Shaw in 1978.

Both players polled 18 votes, but Shaw took the award on a countback.

The Age reports that Collingwood President Eddie McGuire confirmed on Tuesday that Picken would be presented with his trophy later this year, and the club would investigate whether other players may be entitled to retrospective medals.

Picken, who won the Copeland outright in 1983, was pleased that the anomaly was picked up, not by the club, but by the operators of an unofficial supporters website.

Picken, renowned for his spectacular high-flying grabs early in his career, played 212 games for Collingwood from 1974-1983 and in 1986 and was acclaimed as one of the finest big game performers of his generation.

Driver and Toris from Buckley Surfers discovered the anomoly and contacted Eddie - the rest is now history.

Congratulations to BS for allowing the Club to correct an anomoly and fully recognise a Club legend.

Jake Niall of The Age wrote a much better article (posted here by London Dave). Jake Niall doesn't seem to have a problem with naming his sources.
