Mother pulled out baby's fingernails, court told
February 08, 2008
A YOUNG mother has been ordered to face a jury trial accused of forcibly pulling out her baby daughter's fingernails.
The four-month-old baby was missing eight fingernails and had lesions on her body when she was taken to Frankston Hospital on April 7, 2006, Melbourne Magistrates Court heard.
The 22-year-old mother allegedly told a social worker that she pulled out her baby's nails with her own fingers, saying "she cried for a little bit''.
The woman, who is intellectually disabled, lives with her own parents, sister and her partner.
The court heard evidence that social workers were called to interview the mother after the baby was taken to hospital.
In a statement tendered to the court, social worker Shelly Mullens said the woman told her, "my parents should have custody . . . because I am an unfit mother because of what I did to her fingers''.

and as much as i dont like to say it....shouldn't be the one with kids either.
im absolutely sick to death of seeing little kids being afforded less protection than we give to some heroin addict in Kings Cross.
I know in this particular situation, the woman has a disability herself....but come on, its all too frequent. While the whole country seems preoccupied with kids from 50 years ago, many of the present generation are still being treated like shit.
Who's going to say sorry to these kids? |
