Post subject: Happy AUSTRALIA DAY, Let's all Celebrate | |
|
I'd like to wish all fellow Australians a Happy Australia Day and hope you do something uniquely Australian today.
It doesn't matter how you came to be Australian, whether you are descendents of the first Australians, or the more recent Australians, whether you were born here, or migrated here and have taken out citizenship, let's Celebrate the Uniqueness that is us......with my favourite Australian Poem and Song
My Country
Dorothea McKeller
The love of field and coppice, of green and shaded lanes,
Of ordered woods and gardens is running in your veins.
Strong love of grey-blue distance, brown streams and soft, dim skies-
I know but cannot share it, my love is otherwise.
I love a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains,
Of rugged mountain ranges, of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons, I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror - the wide brown land for me!
The stark white ring-barked forests, all tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains, the hot gold hush of noon,
Green tangle of the brushes where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops, and ferns the warm dark soil.
Core of my heart, my country! Her pitiless blue sky,
When, sick at heart, around us we see the cattle die -
But then the grey clouds gather, and we can bless again
The drumming of an army, the steady soaking rain.
Core of my heart, my country! Land of the rainbow gold,
For flood and fire and famine she pays us back threefold.
Over the thirsty paddocks, watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness that thickens as we gaze.
An opal-hearted country, a wilful, lavish land -
All you who have not loved her, you will not understand -
Though earth holds many splendours, wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country my homing thoughts will fly.
I Am Australian
Lyrics by Bruce Woodley and Dobe Newton, written in 1987
music by Bruce Woodley
I came from the dream time, from the dusty red soil plains,
I am the ancient heart - the keeper of the flame,
I stood upon the rocky shore, I watched the tall ships come,
For forty thousand years I'd been the first Australian.
We are one but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come,
we share a dream,
And sing with one voice,
I am, you are, we are Australian.
I came upon the prison ship bound down by iron chains
I cleared the land, endured the lash and waited for the rains.
I'm a settler, I'm a farmer's wife on a dry and barren run
A convict then a free man, I became Australian.
We are one but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come,
we share a dream,
And sing with one voice,
I am, you are, we are Australian.
I'm the daughter of a digger who sought the mother lode
The girl became a woman on the long and dusty road
I'm a child of the depression, I saw the good times come
I'm a bushy, I'm a battler, I am Australian.
We are one but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come,
we share a dream,
And sing with one voice,
I am, you are, we are Australian.
I'm a teller of stories, I'm a singer of songs
I am Albert Namatjira, and I paint the ghostly gums
I am Clancy on his horse, I'm Ned Kelly on the run
I'm the one who waltzed Matilda, I am Australian.
We are one but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come,
we share a dream,
And sing with one voice,
I am, you are, we are Australian.
I'm the hot wind from the desert, I'm the black soil of the plains
I'm the mountains and the valleys, I'm the drought and flooding rains
I am the rock, I am the sky, the rivers when they run
The spirit of this great land, I am Australian.
We are one but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come,
we share a dream,
And sing with one voice,
I am, you are, we are Australian. _________________ Jacqui © Proud Pies 2003 and beyond |

something i noticed as each year passed when i was living in nz and tuning in to news programmes on australia day, there was an american like tendency to wish everyone happy australia day much like how they say happy turkey day and what not.
maybe the significance of australia day is growing every year. i can accept pride and nationalism to an extent but we really are sounding more and more like the friggin' yanks.
and now, here's some opinions of advance australia fair way back when it was introduced on April 19, 1984:
Quote: | MIXED REACTION TO NEW ANTHEM
Australia's new national anthem - "Advance Australia Fair" - was greeted with mixed feelings yesterday.
Government departments were told yesterday that the song was now officially Australia's anthem.
It will be played at all Anzac Day services on April 25.
In a street survey in Melbourne, public opinion ranged from: "I prefer the old anthem of God Save the Queen," to "'Advance Australia Fair' is a great anthem."
Most of those asked between 16 and 20 believe that "any anthem is better than the old one".
Mrs Rebecca Browne, of East Bentleigh, said: "I don't really like 'Advance Australia Fair' as a national anthem. I think the 'Waltzing Matilda' tune, not the words, should be the anthem."
Mr John Gleeson, 31, of Albert Park said: "the new anthem is okay, no worries. It's better than the other one - much more Australian."
Mrs June Moore, 45, of Ringwood said: "It's not bad, but a bit slow. It's the best of what's offering, though."
Mr Peter Brown, 21, of Middle Park said: "I don't like flag-waving songs," Click go the Shears' would be just as good - at least sheep can identify with it."
'As good as any'
Tim Moore, 16,of Ringwood said: "I was most dissatisfied with the old anthem. This is as good as any."
The Premier, Mr Hamer said yesterday he wondered how many people knew the first line for "Advance Australia Fair".
Most people knew the first line of "God Save the Queen" but not many knew all the verses.
"God Save the Queen" was correct when the Queen or her representatives (the Governer-General (sic) and the State Governers (sic) ) were at official functions.
But he had no objection to "Advance Australia Fair" being played as Australias's national anthem at functions such as the Olympic Games, concerts and football matches. |

Happy Australia Day.
We're a young nation composed of a number of parts and influences.
We are one but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come,
we share a dream,
And sing with one voice,
I am, you are, we are Australian.

And that very right (expressing one's democratic opinion) is far more important than some nationalistic fervor _________________ The one man in the world, who never believes he is mad, is the madman. |

I used to prefer "God Bless Australia" but when i compare the lyrics, "I am Australian" wins hands down. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Dont allow them to grind you down PP. Happy Australia day to you too and I hope you have a great one. This is a great nation where all can still make a decent living if they are prepared to put their heads down and bums up, and stop blaming everything else all the time.
PS - Some may argue that we stopped being Collingwood in the new millenium when someone hijacked the club and started waving socialist flags and gold jackets around that have little to do with Collingwood. |
