Post subject: Invasion day protest on Saturday | |
|
Quote: | An Invasion Day protest to be held on January 26 will demand justice for Mulrunji and an end to Aboriginal deaths in custody. It will be the first time in many years that such a demonstration has taken place in Melbourne on Invasion Day.
Commenting on the campaign to force the Queensland and federal governments to bring to trial those responsible for Mulrunji’s death, Jason Tamiru of the Yorta Yorta Aboriginal community told Green Left Weekly: “I would like to see Aboriginal Victoria come to Melbourne and rally against this continued oppression and discrimination, and denounce it clearly. What’s happening today has happened all my life, it’s just that this time it made the news. Aboriginal Australia has lost complete confidence in this system … [but] I see Aboriginal Australia coming together from what has happened.”
The rally is supported by community radio 3CR, Koori radio 3KND, Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation, the Black GST, Swinburne Student Association, the Socialist Alliance, Reconciliation Victoria, Union Solidarity and Australia Asia Worker Links. It will convene outside the State Library at 11am before marching to the Share the Spirit Festival at the Treasury Gardens. |

Come along... I'll be there
Also, it is supported by the group I'm a part of; Socialist Alternative, but the Green Left Weekly is a newspaper published by Socialist Alliance, hence our lack of mention. Gotta love inter-party politics. _________________ I would be ashamed to admit that I had risen from the ranks. When I rise it will be with the ranks... - Eugene Debs |

Good luck with the protest. I admire your enthusiasm and willingness to actually do something for what you believe in. I wish I had that drive.
And try steering clear of those pesky little cops with their pepper sprays ay _________________ Formally frankiboy and FrankieGoesToCollingwood. |

There always has to be a bad guy... 'discrimination', and 'oppression'.
I don't think 'discrimination' and 'oppression' are the problem. 'Discrimination' and 'oppression' aren't the reason why a larger proportion of Aborigines than whites have criminal records (as another link on that page states).
I'm not pushing a party line here, or trotting out redneck soundbites. I read this sort of story and get genuinely worried, because I see symptoms of a larger problem... an 'us against them' mentality, and a desire to blame others for problems which have more complex roots. Those are barriers to integration, and this kind of march seems to be encouraging them.
Just my two cents. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Invasion day....whilst the motivation seems to be good (preventing deaths in custody) how about whilst doing so don't slander the nation we all live in.
I reckon the kangaroo's and wombats should hold a protest for when the bloody aboriginals invaded their country!!! _________________ "The problem with jogging is that the ice falls out of your glass"

I wonder if the Native Americans protest on Thanksgiving?
Fair enough to keep Aboriginal issues front of mind, but is anyone naive enough to believe that if the English hadn't colonised this country, someone else wouldn't have?
Without external intervention, Aboriginal society would have stayed the same as it was. It hadn't changed for thousands of years, they weren't suddenly going to discover agriculture or develop past a hunter/gatherer lifestyle.
Intervention was inevitable.
Yes, there's still bridges to mend and governments can't seem to get the right mix between paternalisim; integration and self government but face facts, no one's going to just hand the country over to 1% of the population to run so how bout we all start moving forward. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

You are all right when you say that we need to act as one, but I don't think this protest is against that. Hence the fact it is not an Indigenous-only event!
A day like tomorrow is not about giving back Indigenous people 100% of the land in our country, it is not about reverse-racism, it is just about making people aware of the injustices that affect Indigenous Australians to this day, and the fact that our unquestioned history of "discovery" wasn't actually a 'discovery' at all, but a genuine invasion. _________________ I would be ashamed to admit that I had risen from the ranks. Invasion Omar?
20/20 hindsight is a beautiful thing, looking at history through modern eyes would make a lot of things "wrong", but at the time; in the society as they were; they were considered right.
Lots of societies over the world have been "colonised" or "invaded". Most of Europe would be a hotch potch of differing influences depending on which cultre was dominant for longest.
We need to get WAAAAAYYYY beyond "this was our land and you took it" to dealing with the current issues.
This kind of demonstration to me is a double edged sword. It raises Aboriginal issues which is a good thing, but it (can) promote divisiveness which is a bad thing IMO. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |
