there are 4 opinions, this is just one of them:
Quote: | IT'S been a summer of sledging on and off the field and it's time we all started behaving ourselves. A sports reporter, a former football coach and politician, a social commentator and Collingwood Football Club's cheerleader Joffa speak out.
Joffa Corfe
Collingwood cheerleader
MOST times I'm pretty content with my lot. I've got a great family and my other family, my beloved Magpies, are heading for another premiership.
But other times, I'm sad and confused and even bitter.
It happens when sporting heroes let me down, and I wish I could be out there to set an example.
We should never accept yobbo behaviour and the fanaticism that breeds violence. I wear my heart on my sleeve and I'm loved and hated because of it.
But I believe I'm without malice. I will always go into battle for my beloved Collingwood, but not with violence.
Worse is the racism that is polluting our sporting terraces.
I hate racism, I deplore racism, and sometimes I think Australia is a racist country in denial.
Thank God for our geographical location, or we would have loaded cannons pointing at our borders.
Just remember that racism is not just about whites and coloured people.
Look what happened at the Australian Tennis Open last year, when Australian youths battled one another over something most people knew nothing about.
Now fanaticism has broken out again at the Australian Open tennis.
We don't want cardboard cutouts at sporting events. But keep out the fanaticism and the racism. |

I disagree with the social commentator's comment that racism and sport are interlinked, because that infers that sport is somehow responsible for racism and/or encourages it.
I simply see it as another backdrop to the problem occurring.
The problem is cultural attitudes, not their occasional vocalisation at the sporting arena. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Humans are an aggressive species, evidenced by our constant need for conflict and warfare. It base, primal and brings out both the best and worst of us.
Sport, in is purest essence is non-lethal warfare, so it is no surprise that it too brings out both the best and worst out of us. Unfortunately, the dislike of the unlike is hardwired into our brains. It's what helped us to evolve and survive into what we are today. Sadly, that often comes out as racism.
We can try to civilise ourselves and curb our basic instincts, but it will always be there. _________________ "There's an old saying in Tennessee, I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee, that says, fool me once, shame on... shame on you. Fool me... you can't get fooled again." - Oscar Wilde |

Wow, I disagree with so much of that. At the very least, any theory on human nature is impossible to prove or even support. _________________ I would be ashamed to admit that I had risen from the ranks. When I rise it will be with the ranks... - Eugene Debs |

Jock, I think he meant whites vs coloured as opposed to whites 'and' couloured which pretty much covers most of us. _________________ Formally frankiboy and FrankieGoesToCollingwood. |
