A Melbourne man has appeared in court facing charges of possessing and importing child pornography.
Nathan Portnoy, 40, of Bentleigh in Melbourne's south-east, is alleged by the Australian Federal Police to have imported more than 16,000 images of child pornography.
The AFP allegedly found the images on Portnoy's laptop computer when he arrived in Australia on a flight from China.
The Australian national was detained at Melbourne airport on December 18 after a tip-off to the AFP's online child sex exploitation team.
Additional computers, hard drives, USB drives and CD files were allegedly seized under warrant at Portnoy's Bentleigh home. The items are now being tested by forensic scientists.
An AFP spokeswoman said the charges were not related to the arrests last week of 24 men around Australia, which followed a four-month investigation into the use of US-based websites.
Portnoy appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court this morning and was bailed to reappear on March 12 next year.
The maximum penalty for possessing and importing child pornography is 10 years' imprisonment. |

I'm not sure I understand this comment. Are you saying that a person is allowed to practice his/her beliefs no matter what they are? |

Unlike Nuxta I don't understand the tack you have taken on this subject. Maybe you could explain the comment further.
Being as i've dealt with this kind of vermin (just so there's no misconception, I talking about the Portnoy character) both in a professional and personal capacity I can honestly say I hope, if convicted, he not only get's a long term prison sentence but is also placed into the prison's general population.
