New laws to mirror marriage rights for gay couples
December 05, 2007

SAME-sex couples will enjoy many of the same rights as married couples under new State Government laws allowing gay and lesbian people to register their relationships.

The laws will give unmarried couples, including heterosexual de facto couples, more rights in cases of medical emergencies and property and life insurance entitlements.

The move follows controversial decisions by new Premier John Brumby to have laws drawn up to legalise abortion, and an agreement to allow genetically-modified crops to be grown in Victoria.

Debate on the new relationship laws next year is likely to be heated with many conservative MPs opposed to recognition of same-sex relationships.

Attorney-General Rob Hulls said registered relationships would not be a gay marriage or a civil union.

"These reforms provide that Victorian laws, in most cases, treat de facto and same-sex couples in the same way as married couples," he said.

Simple and clear. Great response mate, I almost totally agree...

The only problem is the new laws don't go far enough.

Marriage shouldn't be something that the government can pass laws on anyway, it's supposed to be between the people getting married and their god/spirit/football club president

I think it's a greqt compromise, giving defacto partners regardless of sex the same legal rights as a married couple without actually legalising the "marriage" which is essentially a religious ceremony.

Gay couples get what they want from the legal partner ppoint of view and can have a committment ceremony oor whatever if they want to make a formal deal out of it.

And what is Marriage if not a commitment ceremony.
One day, we will look back on the prejudice that exists on this issue and laugh.
One day.

Personally, I don't have a problem, but like i said before, Marriage is essentially a religious thing which is why this IMO is a good compromise.

Laugh? More like cry that such backwardness could have extended into the 21st century.

It's a positive step, but there's still a way to go.

It is essentially a religious thing.
So legalize it and let the various religions decide if they will perform it.
As it stands, just one more freedom that is being denied the populace.

If they did have legal parity with straight couples it might help stop this sort of mischief. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/12/03/nsperm103.xml
Obviously he’s an idiot, I just wish he was a pastry chef instead of a fire fighter… sort of lets the side down a bit.

That's disgusting. Ask a guy for help and when it goes pear shaped, ruin his life. Appalling behaviour.

Why shouldn't lesbian women be allowed to raise kids?

You've got to feel for the guy in the article, regardless of how stupid he might have been... he's fallen foul of an inconsistency in the system and been stuck with the consequences.

Tess, can you dig up any psychological fact that a father is better for the development of a child than two mothers? Especially in this case, where the couple (that you suggest should challenge for custody) have had no part in the children's life so far?
