The only valid point in the article, is the question why the kid kept getting put up to the next grade?

Did the school or teachers decide that if they couldn't teach him, they'd just flush him thru the system and out the other end?

He's 14 years old and still can't count past 10 should the teachers have decided to make him repeat grade 1 nine times?? This kid needed special schooling and it shouldn't have been a matter of what the kid wanted, it should've been a matter of the god damn parents GETTING him there whether he wanted to go OR NOT.

Oh and it's also worth mentioning that teachers these days are pretty much banned from telling parents if their kids are failing. All they can say in the worthless reporting system that the Education department uses is "not established". But in the end they can say "not established" every day of the kids schooling life but if the parents aren't going to pull their fingers out...

What kind of government would bring in suchg a socialist reporting system that refuses to acknowledge actual performance? That's really going to prepare people for the workforce. Rolling Eyes

Oh yeah, that's right.

*waits for inevitable.*

Not at our school.

There are 2 kids in my daughters prep class who are repeating prep again in 2008. Their parents were told long ago that their kids would probably be unable to achieve the minimum CSFII level for entry into year 1 next year.

It's different at that age Annodam, my daughter repeated prep because she contracted pneumonia, missed a large part of the year and was asleep in class for the rest.

Yet in older grades, they are extremely reluctant to make kids repeat. And the kids know it. When a teacher tells a kid to pick up or they'll be made to repeat the year, and they see other kids doing worse who keep going up, they know they've got more chance of being expelled than being made repeat. Consequently, little incentive to lift performance.
