They almost certainly will have the balance of power in the senate after the next election. |
Sort of. If they vote with Labor, then it's basically level and will come down to the two independants. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

No no, that's how it is at the moment.
After next election more of the liberal senators will probably be out on their arse, so that would mean either the greens get more or (more likely) the ALP does. Either way, greens would hold the BoP... _________________ I would be ashamed to admit that I had risen from the ranks. When I rise it will be with the ranks... - Eugene Debs |

No, as I understand it, at this stage, they're predicting the coalition to hold onto 37, greens 5, family first 1 nick Xeno-anti-pokies 1 and Labor 32.
That would mean greens + Labor = Coalition in senate. Family first and little nicky hold the balance of power. Labor will need both (+ greens) to pass legislation.
So, the Greens can vote with labor to pass legislation but can't prevent it being blocked. That depends on others. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Just as an interesting tangent.... Dave and I were checking out this site the other night, how about we all do this test. It's not perfect, and a little bit biased towards issues dominant in the US (pointed out by DfC) but I think it is pretty reasonably accurate. Maybe we could post our scores?

Good one Omar! My supervisor put me onto this about 5 years ago when I was doing some research. Libertaria left for me - in good company with Gandhi and Nelson Mandela!
Score -6.88 on Eco Left/Right; -6.10 on Social Lib/Authoritarian
Did David clock the thing? |

Economic Left/Right: -0.50 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.31
Around the centre, although I was somewhat surprised as I would have thought I leaned slightly to the right economically and slightly to the left socially.
It seems a fair test, but I think they needed to ask more broad-ranging questions or hypotheticals to really get to the point, rather than placing such emphasis on specific issues.
I wonder if they've done many psychological studies about what exactly leads people to lean towards left or right-wing? All I can gather is the highly stereotypical generalisation that radicalism is a youthful tendency, and conservatism comes with age. I wonder if you would discover that, for example, more introverted people tend to be more conservative? Or that gender differences can have a role?
Damn I should have studied psychology... _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

David if you are interested in the area, next time you are at Uni grab some books by Bob Altemeyer, eg The Authoritarian Spectre (1996); and/or Enemies of Freedom: Understanding Right wing Authoritarianism (1988); Right Wing Authoritarianism (1981); Michael Billig, Fascists: A Social Psychological View of the National Front; Ideology and Social Psychology: Extremism, Moderation and Contradiction (1982); T. Adorno et al., The Authoritarian Personality (1950). It's a really interesting field of study. |

Interesting test. Lots of negatively worded and loaded questions. I looked at the wording very carefully before choosing as a lot of them used "always", and why I agreed with some of the questions on a some or even most of the time, I couldn't stomach "always".
So, sorry to dissapoint people but the scores were:
Economic Left/Right: -3.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.23 _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Some issues I was neutral upon. So I really had to think if it came to the crunch then which way would I sway.
Has my result surprised anyone?? _________________ All this may be summed up in one word - CHARACTER - and if that is not worth developing, nothing is.
