The Senate remaining in the total control of the same Party that forms Government is the reason Howard got kicked out.
The fact that he could bring in any legislation he wanted was why he went so far with Work(No)Choices. With a Senate that needs to be coerced there needs to be give and take.
Work(No)Choices will go. But I don't expect the new legislation to be anywhere near what the Liberal scare campaign would have you believe. |

OK, bit of an update.
Ch 7 have just reported that the Liberal Party are urging their members to vote for the repel of Work(No)Choices. They do however want to retain the unfair dismissal laws.
I doubt if they will get their way totally on unfair dismissal. |

Which is why I like the idea of having a senate. It has the effect of moderating the party with power in the house of reps.
As far as Workchoices goes, I agree. There's no way Rudd is stupid enough to try and go back to pre 96.
AWA's will go and unfair dismisal laws will be amended to include small business but maybe still have a staff ceiling lower than 100.
Freedom of association will stay as most likely will right of entry although it may be varied from present.
Non union enterprise agreements will stay as a sop to business but a new "obligation to negotiate" will come in.
As I sadi earlier, I'm looking forward to seeing what he actually put up and what gets passed by the senate. I'm guessing that rather than legislate amendments to the act, he'll re write the act about 80+% the same with some changes and call it something new.
A period of uncertainty will reign for at least 6 months as lawyers for each side disagree about interpretations. It's only once they start getting some precedents and therefore some case law to rely on that things will settle down for business, but it won't be chaotic or anything. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Xenophen has said he will vote with labor on Workchoices including the re-introduction of unfair dismissal laws.
Xenophen is fairly progressive and doesn't differ that much from labor, in fact in some things he is more labor than labor _________________ The one man in the world, who never believes he is mad, is the madman. |

Sorry to be pedantic, but they can't reintroduce something that already exists.
You mean that existing unfair dismissal laws will be amended to include employees of business with less than 100 people (although I still expect a cap) and maybe retrenchments. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

If unfair dismissal laws for businesses under 100 staff were scrapped and now labor will bring them back, that is a re-introduction of those laws.
ie gone, now coming back
And you can be as pedantic as you like, it won't make you right though, perhaps a little more silly than you already are, at best _________________ The one man in the world, who never believes he is mad, is the madman. |

But if unfair dismissal laws exist, then varying who they apply to is an amendment.

Ah frank, to suggest that you are a tool of the highest order would be to completely over rate a common garden variety bully.

If you're employed as a casual then it would have made no difference. |
I suspected as much, but I thought I'd have a whinge anyway
No unfair dismissal has occurred yet, thankfully, and it seems that another employee may have swiped the missing $120 from the safe. Which means that I don't have to be the scapegoat any more. Whoo! _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Very good read in today's hun by someone called Geoffrey Blainey.

I gather he's a noted historian who's ben accused of being left wing,
Quote: | But in the end, John Howard will be seen by vast numbers of Australians as one of the great prime ministers.

He'a a right-wing historian and Howard favourite, best known for questioning the level of Asian immigration to Australia during the 1980s. Nearly choked when I read the sentence on Howard never failing to promote the virtues of democracy. Would have thought truth would have been one of the most important.
His comment about Hawke and Keating failing to beat inflation is also a joke. According to the ABS inflation averaged 2.6% over the last four years of the Hawke Keating government - under Howard it averaged 2.5%. Again, never mind inconvenient facts. |

Howard will be remembered for his divisive/racial Government but mainly as the 2nd PM to lose his seat. |
