Could not stand up and challenge Howard.
Now he can not stand up and be opposition leader.

No Balls Costello, has a nice ring to it.

Weak. Never had the stomach for a challenge and now has gone missing when his party needs him the most.

?
Howard annointed him and his only real contest would have been if Turnball nominated.
Looks like Turnball will be the leader. Unlees Joe Hockey stands, which I hope he does. Got a lot of time for Hockey.

There was no way PC was going to be opposition leader.

Can you imagine the payback for all those years of headkicking ?

Looks like we won't be seeing this after all:

Keating didn't have a chance the first time either. The difference is he had the guts to openly challenge instead of snipping away through the media and running around the shadows in parliament house and he took the opportunity. Second time around he won. Costello hasn't fought for anything in his whole political career. He could have taken the leadership instead of Downer when he took over post Hewson, but again he didn't have the nuts for the fight.

Does this mean an end to the comedy duo of Abbott and Costello? Wink

At the moment it looks like a swing of 3% or less would be required to win in 2010.
More than achievable.

A bit of a shock, but Joel has a point. Would anyone really vote for Costello? I always viewed him as the Liberal Party's Beazley.

The trouble is, who will the next leader be? I certainly wouldn't vote for Turnbull, and I'm not sure Abbott would be much better. Joe Hockey's not so bad, who knows?

Glass jaw Costello.

Anyway he would have suffered an even worse belting than Howard

What he could have done was hang around for 18 months and done the hard yards then stepped aside so whoever was standing as leader came across as fresh to the electorate.

Costello does not have the numbers. Turnbull will be opposition leader, he has the numbers and the money to call the shots. Howard may not be in control, he still has a fair amount of say though and he hates Costello.
