Do yourself a favour. Don't live in Melbourne, it's a slum.

Mordialloc is nice, resonable pricing. Close to the beach. Plenty of public transport and on the Frankston trainline - if that helps.

frankston north is the part of frankston that gives frankston the bad name. It's basically a suburb built by the housing commision.

If you want to go Frankston way then go to Frankston south.

Stay away from Kananook. Still has a bad name due to the serial killer that was on the loose there in the early 90s. Pretty scummy area, it is essentiall Nth Frankston. As punk said, Sth Frankston isn't all that bad.

Dave, it all depends where you want to work, and how long you are willing to commute to get to work.

The Mornington Peninsula is a sensational place to live, and takes about an hour to get to the city (from Rosebud and Dromana area - note, during peak hour it takes alot longer), and is still relatively cheap. I'm currently in the Nth Melb, but I'm originally from the peninsula, and I'm moving back, simply because the of the lifestyle. It's generally laid back, and I will commute for atleast a yr, until I find a job close to home.

But, for the price you want, you prob won't get a place with 4 bedrooms...probably two at max (and I'm talking about anywhere).

West of Melb is still relatively cheap (in some places), but it's not the nicest place to live. Stay away from Noble Park etc. Berwick isn't too bad, though it's relatively close to Pakenham.

However, if you're working in Melb, and you don't want to commute, I'd recommend living near a train line, to make it a bit easier.

I'm originally from the west & I couldn't wait to get outta there!

However, it depends on where in the west. IMO, if you're talking Sunshine (scum) Melton (scum) Werribee (all scum). Footscray is getting a little better as is Yarraville (or Gayville as it's known nowadays.) But prices in these suburbs have sky rocketed due to them being within close proximity to the CBD.

You could try Bacchus Marsh, we have friends out there & it seems nice enough.

I also I own a property in Rosebud & if you think the Mornington Peninsula is cheap, you'd better think again! Prices are going through the roof down there! Other than Martha Cove, Mornington Peninsula Shire are not releasing anymore land for development, some crap about a "Sustainable Peninsula."

If I was renting my place out in Rosebud, I'd be wanting a lot more than $200 a week....Sorry!

Good luck!

I have lived in the Nth of Melbourne for the last two years, and have spent enough time in the area to know that I would NEVER live in the Western suburbs of Melbourne. I also had relatives who lived out towards Tullarmarine/Essendon for over 20 years, who moved recently. No need to get defensive.

That said, there are some nice areas out west, but I would never live in areas such as Footscray, anywhere near Highpoint, Essendon etc. That is my personal opinion, but everyone to themself. It also has alot to do with what you are used to. I can't stand living in the city because I'm not from the city, but there are others who love it. Personal preference. I'd rather spend my time by the beach, than near factories, or nightlife.
