The quicker Kevin Rudd pulls out these illegal forces, the better.

Friggin politicians say it is "just cause"! ..WTF! again...WTF! Human beings you cu*ts! Not toy soldiers, now it's time for people to ask, why are we there in the first place!?!

dictionary:

just:
1. guided by truth, reason, justice, and fairness: We hope to be just in our understanding of such difficult situations.

cause:
1. a person or thing that acts, happens, or exists in such a way that some specific thing happens as a result; the producer of an effect: You have been the cause of much anxiety. What was the cause of the accident?

person:
1. a human being, whether man, woman, or child: The table seats four persons

just cause = guided by truth, reason, a person or thing that acts.

The Russians couldn't do it, so what makes Australia think it can.
Interesting that NATO contribute relatively little to a conflict on their doorstep. In fact I have just heard on ABC radio that drug users send more money to Afghanistan than NATO do!
While I have sympathy for the family of the deceased, it must be stated that any soldier in a war zone knows that death is a possible outcome. SAS soldiers more than most.
Hopefully the family stick to their guns and deny the politicians the opportunity to strut at the mans funeral.

Pure heroin is back in town and is coming from the war zone. Our boys are on the front line now. It's a bullshit excercise brought about by Dubya.

I feel sorry for the grunts, RIP.

I'd really like to think there's a massive difference between what Russia tried to achieve and what our guys are there for. Otherwise, point taken.

Certainly is a difference from our point of view stui. And I would love to rid the world of the Taliban and all its like.
But we are seen as no different than the Russians. Invaders. And they believe they are freedom fighters.

Having been in the Army myself it is always sad when a Soldier goes down.

To his family my thoughts and prayers.

He did what he was trained to do.

just wondering, EBB, do you believe in the possibility of a just war?

Like World War 2, for example?

Regardless of whether you believe Australia's operations in Afghanistan are just, I believe that it is possible for there to be such a thing as a 'just war'.

The problem with "just" wars is that those advocating them don't want to go and fight in them, even less do they want their sons and daughters to fight in them.

My Dad was in Vietnam and he is the most anti war person I have ever known, he saw a few of his mates die.
He says "no war is justified for any reason"

Dont mix up the debacle in Iraq with Afghanistan.

There is a valid reason for being there and it is a shit thing to hear about anyone dying there, however there were demonstrable objectives, IE - rooting out the taleban and aQ associates, and denying them a refuge to train/arm etc. Unfortunately, their refuge is now in Iraq and Pakistan, so maybe not that much has been acheived, but I do think it fits into the 'just war' category if such a thing exists.

(On a completely alternate note, I think 'just war' is an overused IR term that should be placed in proper context, it is a rhetorical paradigm - ALL wars are fought in terms of economics, resources and hegemony, whether just or not. The difference between a 'good' war and a 'bad' war is the result.)

I do feel for the troopers family. And hope our soldiers are home as soon as possible. Hopefully some diplomatic pressure will see NATO troops pull some heavy lifting in the south, instead of staying put in relatively peaceful areas such as Bamyan, Mazar Sharif, Badakhshan. Their governments have restricted them from basically going anywhere near where the real bad bastards are, in the south in places like Tarin Kowt and Jalalabad.

Essentially, the closer to Pakistan the worse, coincedence probably...
