| Post subject: Career Choice - Need help! |  |
|
Hello this is quite a unusual post.
I wasn't sure where to post this so if this is the wrong forum please re direct it to the right place mods.
Well i just turned 20 and im still stuck at the local Fast Food joint as a job.
Im still unsure of what i want to do as a career.
All that i know is that i Love Sports mainly Collingwood(AFL) & Cricket!!
and im always on the computer like 24/7. Love surfing the web and playing Games.
Really i am posting here to see if any fellow Nicksters could give me any suggestions/ideas of what you think would be a good career move.
Or even let me know what you do for a living!!
Things i dont want to be
-Tradesman (i have tried this not for me)
-Fitness Instructor (No thankyou)
-Telemarketer (Who does?).
Im kind of interested in Multimedia but all the courses are pretty expensive like 10k a year.
So cmon guys let me know what you guys do for a living or give me some suggestions.

How bout a PE/IT teacher, keep your sporting interest as well as your interest in computers. Many courses out there, can go to tafe or apply as mature age at universities.
Not the greatest pay, but good hours and good holidays.

What are you good at?
Not just school subjects, but think.
Do you pick things up quickly; do you like being outdoors or indoors; do you like being around people or doing your own thing?

Why not try an IT course at Local TAFE. Start at a Cert II in Information Technology and then work your way up from there.

Well im not sure what im good at.
Im kinda good at sport but nothing of the elite level so cant be a collingwood player 
outdoors & Indoors i like Both!!!
im a pretty shy person so i like being on my own but being around people really isnt an issue.
i could do an IT Course. I was leaning more towards multimedia cos u can be a web designer, 2d 3d animation, games designing and programming. But cos you do all that stuff on the computer im not sure if u have to be a good hand drawer cos im a bad hand drawer.
also wats in IT Cert 2? wat job outcomes? good money?

Cert 2 is for people who don't know much about computers.
Could do a Programming or a Web-Design Course and I am interested in doing 1 myself soon but I do that in Cert 4 and Diploma

can i suggest you have a look at mycareer or other job websites and see where the most demand is, what type of experience and qualifications you need. also have a look at the job descriptions/expectations to give you an idea of what the job is meant to be.
then list all the things you think you are good at, what you're not good at and then look at how you can strengthen any weaknesses, whether it is a course or work experience.

i would suggest having a good look at this as well. the IT business is booming again and uni enrollments for IT courses dropped right off following the dot com bust. there are predictions of a massive increase increase in IT jobs over the next few years. |

good call dave, you should get plenty of opportunities. brush up on the spelling though, for christ's sake - or slow down on the typing...whatever it takes. |

i dunno if they have them at tafe or theres like an institute u can go to, but at uni they have career guidance counsellors. They mainly help with subject selection, but, if u annoy them enough, they actually have heaps of info and they give tests and stuff to see what youd be good at.
id guess at tafe etc that there would be an advisor who can answer all your questions about the certain courses you want do, and what other courses are available that may interest you. i think it would be a good idea to contact them and see if theyll help you out!
another option is to buy a careers guide - up here its called QTAC - available for the newsagencies up here (i think theres on called 'the career guide' as well) - which has uni and tafe courses for EVERYTHING in the WORLD!  ok so not everything, but a lot of courses - from a tafe course in learning to surf to a masters in physiotherapy and rehab, it gives an overview of each course and what the prereqs. are. and its pretty easy to use, its either in alphabetical order or in order of like 'faculty' eg like health, IT etc...
