A MOTORCYCLIST is dead after a bizarre collision caused by an emu.

The man was riding in the state's west when he hit the emu south of Chetwynd, near the Victoria-South Australia border.

The victim, who was from Mt Gambier, was travelling south on the Casterton-Edenhope Rd when the collision occurred at 10.20am yesterday.

Locals say the area where the crash happened is notorious for wildlife crossing roads.

"There should be more signs there about the wildlife," Gavin Rice said.

I have had a bird fly into me at 100 kmh and had my shoulder dislocated from the impact. A guy hit a horse last year on a bike and he died and the horse survived. Animals are a danger to riders as its like hitting a wall.

Oh my god, Franki...
