Under extreme pressure tonight Howard is letting slip that there are "discussions" occurring in two days time regarding our troops in Iraq.
I reckon that the conversation will revolve around getting an announcement into the election ASAP about a return timetable.

Win or lose, Rudd has forced Howard to finally do the right thing.

No he didn't. Howard said the role of our troops in Iraq had been evolving... and flagged there were discussions going to take place over the next few days about an increased training role for our troops in Iraq.

He didn't give a figure and he didn't give a timetable either.

That's doesn't mean a pull out of troops.

I never said he gave a timetable.I did say he will give one ASAP, which I assume will be in the next 3 weeks.

Howard is reacting to the polls and we have an election in five weeks. Everyone wants out of this police action except dubya and johnny.

All the troops will remain, they will now become "trainers" for the Iraqi Army.
In effect it means nothing, we had "trainers" in Vietnam which was just a euphemism for combat troops by another name.

Its done so that Politicians can put their hand on their heart and say "We have no combat troops in Iraq"

The more things change the more they stay the same

As long as we partner with the US the situation in Iraq will remain whether there is a change in government or not. Rudd can say what he wants, even he knows what is at stake if we get on the wrong side of the US.
So if you think changing Governments will contribute to a change with the Iraq situation then you are greatly deceived.

Well, one thing is certain, under Rudd there will be no combat troops or "trainers" in Iraq after July 2008, regardless of what the US does.

Mate would not believe that in a fit. Wait until he gets into Government then meets with the US delegate and watch him backflip. There is more under the table delegations going on than you , I and Rudd are not privvy to. As I said if you believe that he can just pull 'em out then you are severely deceived.

We may be a "partner" with the US, but so is Britain. Now what are they doing in regards to Iraq?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/7034010.stm
They have a plan for withdrawal. Why haven't we?
Will be a change of Government in the U.S. in less than 18 months time, so no need to ride Dubya's coat tails anymore.

What, you think jellyback Kevvie, the man who needs a focus group to tell him which side to get out of bed of in the morning, will suddenly stand for something IF he gets elected? Wink
