Stui Very Happy you are just the best... You'll have to teach Nuffy to sit on your shoulder as you go for a walk so that you can bring him to the games!? (maybe?) wouldnt that be superb.... Keep up the great work. When he's grown and flying I bet he'll never be too far away from you...

Nah. Plenty of others have raised baby magpies without posting their efforts.

I wouldn't try to teach him to sit on my shoulder and go to a footy match or down the street, I don't want to domesticate him.

When he can fly, he'll bugger off into the park next door where his family are. I'm sure he'll hang around for a feed at least and stay in the area but I'd rather have him as a wild bird who can come and bum a feed than a dependant pet.

Be assured that he will continue to hang around after he joins his family stui.
My father feeds a family of Magpies (not everyday as he does not want them to become reliant) and the young one's always come back looking for tucker.
But there will come a day when his parents decide that he has to move on and find his own territory and mate, therefore effectively kicking him out of home.

Man Stui what type of dogs do you have for a Magpie to be even in the same yard & still be alive & kicking?

Absolutely nothing survives here with my lot....

A german shephard and a Kelpie. They're under good control as long as I'm nearby, but if I'm not watching - could be a different story.

Brief update, the nuffmeister has learned to look down for food. Leaving him alone for extended periods has fast tracked his learning.

I went to do some work this morning, fed him before I left, deliberately spilled a bit and also put some extra in a bowl on the cage floor. When I got home, all the food in the bottom of the cage was gone, and he was fairly relaxed about going 7 hours without a feed instead of being frantic.

I let him go for a walk around the yard and fed him because he chased me everywhere I went, showed him a finger full of mince and instead of putting it in his mouth, dropped it on the ground at his feet. Without hesitating, he bent over, looked once and picked it up and ate it. Very Happy

He also managed to catch a moth that i'd disabled with the hose. Wink

Flying is getting better, he can make about 6 metres jumping off my hand now.

I don't think he'll go far. Once he can fly so I know he's safe from cats etc, I'll just let him go and leave the cage door open. His family are basically 20 metres away in the park next door.

Thought I'd stick some more pics up. Nuffy and the two viscious beasts that guard the backyard against other dogs.

As you can see from the photos' he's still a messy eater and is still no where near full size. Still has lots of pinfeathers although the tail is starting to get there. He won't be going anywhere in a hurray I don't think.
