How cute.

We have had a few magpies visit in the spring over the years, it got up to about 20 at one stage, One had no beak at one stage, but that slowly grew back. (Most probably had been hit by a car) It was like a pair of maggies one year then doubling with their families each year after that.

Dunno about daily reports but....he's doing great. Little bugger's getting greedy. Instead of 4 hourly feeds he's squawking like a mad bastard after 1 1/2 - 2 hrs. Of course, when I feed him, he doesn't eat much and then gets hungry again quickly.

So I'm gonna start with some tough love and push him back to 4 hourly. I told him today, if he squawked at his mum like that, she'd peck him on the head.

he's also discovered how to use the perch in the cage instead of just necking himself every time he walks under it...... Sort of.

He jumped up on the perch earlier, fell off backwards while still hanging on and ended up on his arse with his feet still holding the perch and his throat sitting on top as well. Looked like a demented attempt at chin ups.

I know some people in Bendigo who raised 2 magpies from young'ens.

They weren't caged and decided to stay on their own free will. They were great pets and friendly to "their" owners, however, the bastard birds attacted everyone else.

Update for today, he's going along well although a tad grumpy at waiting 3 hours between feeds.

He jumped out of the cage earlier after I opened it and turned away for a second to put the food down. Just caught him. All he did then was look at me and squawk for food.

Once he's finished eating, he shakes his head likea do and struts off over the table or onto the floor of the deck. If I'm wearing old clothes, I let him sit on my leg and give him a pat and he settles down for a snooze.

(old clothes required because his digestive tract is working quite well, as is his bowels. Typical baby. Eats, shits, crys and sleeps.)

He's doing well, but I'm going to have to move him off the deck. It's like having a cross between a baby and a teenager. Confused

I put a little meat in a bowl for him to try to get him to look down and pick some up. Dozy bugger walked thru it, sat in it, then wandered off around the cage only to stop and pick a bit of the meat off his toes. Rolling Eyes

He's basically always hungry but if I feed him too often, he only eats a bit then is hungry again 30 minutes later, so I make him wait 2-3 hours. Only problem is I can't go out the back deck for a smoke or to relax cos as soon as he sees me, he squawks like he hasn't been fed in a year, even if it was only 30 minutes ago.

When I let him out for a walk, he'll pick at things on the ground that catch his eye, but even when he's supposedly starving, it doesn't occur to the bloody nuffy to peck at the bowl of meat I put right in front of him while I feed him. Like a teenager who'll lay on the couch and grumble about being hungry but won't get off their ass and walk into the kitchen and get something.

So, I'm gonna stick him under a lean to in the yard where he's out of the wind and weather, but far enough away from the deck that I can sit there in peace without getting my head split by the sqawking. Teach him a little patience or; failing that; to learn to feed himself more.
