I was giving the dogs a run in the park next door and there was a young magpie hopping around on the ground. He's got a nearly full size head and feet but tiny body and some down mixed in with the black and white feathers. Wings are way under developed to fly yet. I walked over and picked him up, no problems.
I have no way of finding the nest or putting him back so I took him home and put him in a spare cage out on the back deck under cover.
After checking what they eat (anything) went and bought some packets of kitten food, took him out of the cage, sat him in one hand and got him to eat some off my finger. After a rocky start, he got the hang of the idea quite well.
Because he's a wild bird, I don't intend to keep him in a cage once he can fly, I'll just feed him until he's big enough to take off. if I left him in the park, cats or dogs would have just got him.
I was thinking of calling him Bucks, but he's really unco so that doesn't seem right. Any suggestions? _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Nice work Stui. Although I like his endeavour, Toovs would be fitting. _________________ Need a pen? try Pen Island. www. penisland. net |

Luckily you did not put it back Stui as the Parents would have destroyed it any way. I raised a baby magpie mate. I am willing to give you some tips as long as you are raising it to let it back to freedom.
The one I raised still hangs around and feeds out of our hands. It also has now had Babes of its own.
PM me mate if you want some advise. _________________ All this may be summed up in one word - CHARACTER - and if that is not worth developing, nothing is.

You could raise it so you can bring it to the game and become a Mascot _________________ I am Da Man |

too easy. sorry guy if you are reading this. though to be fair the build of the bird sounds a bit like where guy is now and he needs to continue to develop. _________________ Purveyor of sanctimonious twaddle. |

I've decided to name the little fella, "Nuffy". He's so unco I couldn't use an actual players name.
Here's young nuffy having a stroll in the garden bed after lunch. Mum looks on from the fence.
Thanks for the tips BWphantom. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

No probs mate...Good luck with it all. Really is a full time job raising a baby magpie.
Good thing about it this all now is that if you can get the magpie to the stage you have it will now more than likely survive.
