October 10th 2007: Fire Rips Through KGV Grandstand
By Mark Worley - Link
A massive fire overnight has put an end to the Glenorchy Football Club's premiership celebrations - and destroyed the historic Cresswell Beakley Stand at KGV.
Fire crews responded to the blaze at 12.50am this morning, finding the stand engulfed in flames.
Before they had a chance to begin firefighting operations, the flames spread into rooms beneath the grandstand.
The rooms include the Glenorchy Junior Football Club rooms, the past players' rooms, a weights gym and the away team's change rooms.
It has been less than a month since Glenorchy beat arch rival Clarence to take out the SFL Premier League title.
Glenorchy player and junior development officer Matt Dillon said it was a cruel way to have to halt celebrations.
"The junior football club will probably be the worst hit, as all of their equipment and uniforms were stored in the rooms,'' Mr Dillon said.
"This club has plenty of support, though, and we will be able to get through it.''
The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but the Tasmania Fire Service estimates the cost of damages to be about $600,000.

It's a very sad day for Glenorchy supporters, it's stood for so long and was named after two of the best clubmen, Bob Beakley who with his brother owned the arcade not far from the ground he was the one that started of the Southern Primary Junior Football Assocision also Merv Creswell (RIP) was the father of the current Devils coach and former Swans player Darryn Creswell. He also ran Creswell coaches before passing away, just sad news all around.
The small area in which the stand is which is behind the goals at the City end was home to a lot of the great moments of my childhood supporting the club, it's almost as bad as when the stand at North Hobart burned down.
Just so sad _________________ Ðavâgé
