Posties urged not to take industrial action
October 03, 2007
A UNION-led strike by postal workers would only serve to hurt the employees and their families, Australia Post says.
More than 7500 staff have voted to support industrial action if their claim for a better deal on wages and conditions is rejected.
The Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union said workers would roll out work bans and stoppages if Australia Post refused to negotiate over a new enterprise bargaining agreement.
While 10,000 staff took part in the ballot, Australia Post said the 7655 CEPU members who backed industrial action was "hardly a strong mandate".
They represented less than half of CEPU members at Australia Post and showed almost 80 per cent of its 35,000-strong workforce did not support the union's agenda, it said.
"All that a strike will achieve is to take money out of the pocket of our people," corporate human resources chief Rod McDonald said.
